Oilers Arena FAQ

Where did the Oilers play before Rogers Place?

At Northlands Coliseum, from November 1974 to 2016. The building was also called the Edmonton Coliseum, Skyreach Centre and Rexall Place. The Oilers’ first two WHA seasons, 1972–1974, were at the Edmonton Gardens.

Did the Oilers ever play in Calgary?

No. For the first WHA season they were renamed the Alberta Oilers because the plan was to split home games between Edmonton and Calgary, but every home game was played at the Edmonton Gardens, and the team went back to the Edmonton Oilers name the next year.

Why did the Oilers leave Northlands Coliseum?

By 2015 it was the second-oldest and third-smallest arena in the NHL. The Katz Group proposed a new downtown arena in 2010, the city reached an agreement in 2012, and Rogers Place opened in September 2016.

Is Northlands Coliseum still standing?

Not for long. The Oilers’ home for all five of their Stanley Cups closed at the end of 2017, and Edmonton City Council voted in 2022 to demolish it. It is being dismantled, with demolition due to be finished by 2028. The Edmonton Gardens was demolished in 1982.

Where do the Oilers play now?

At Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton, which opened on September 8, 2016, and seats 18,347 for hockey. It hosted Stanley Cup Final games in 2024 and 2025.
