Calgary Flames Arena History: Every Home Since 1972

The Flames started in Atlanta in 1972 and moved to Calgary in 1980. That adds up to three homes: the Omni Coliseum in Atlanta, the small Stampede Corral, and since 1983 the Scotiabank Saddledome, which is in its final season before Scotia Place opens.

Here is every home in order, with the years the Flames played there, what made each one matter and what stands on the site today. Each arena with a ThrillZing guide links to it.

Flames Arena FAQ

Where did the Flames play before the Saddledome?

At the Stampede Corral in Calgary, for their first three seasons there (1980–1983). Before the move they spent eight seasons, 1972–1980, as the Atlanta Flames at the Omni Coliseum.

Why did the Flames leave Atlanta?

Attendance fell, and the Omni had no luxury suites to bring in extra money. Owner Tom Cousins sold the team in 1980 to a Calgary group, which paid $16 million, then the highest price ever paid for an NHL franchise, and moved it to Calgary.

Is the Stampede Corral still standing?

No. The 1950 arena at Stampede Park was demolished in 2020 and 2021 to make room for the expansion of the BMO Centre. The Omni Coliseum in Atlanta was demolished in 1997, and State Farm Arena now stands on its site.

Are the Flames getting a new arena?

Yes. Ground was broken in July 2024 for Scotia Place, which is due to open for the 2027–28 season. The 2026–27 season is the Flames’ last at the Saddledome, with the final regular-season game scheduled for April 10, 2027.

Where do the Flames play now?

At the Scotiabank Saddledome at Stampede Park in Calgary. It opened in 1983, hosted hockey at the 1988 Winter Olympics and seats 19,289.
