Bruins Arena FAQ

Where did the Bruins play before TD Garden?

At the Boston Garden, from 1928 to 1995. Before that they spent their first four seasons, 1924–1928, at the Boston Arena on St. Botolph Street, where they won the first NHL game ever played in the United States.

How many arenas have the Bruins had?

Three: the Boston Arena, the Boston Garden and TD Garden. The Bruins also went back to the Boston Arena for a single game in 1952, after a collapsed awning at North Station damaged pipes at the Garden.

Why did the Bruins leave the Boston Garden?

The 1928 building had no air conditioning, fog formed over the ice at some playoff games, and the power failed during Stanley Cup Final games in 1988 and 1990. The Bruins played their last official game there in the 1995 playoffs and moved into the new arena, then called the FleetCenter, that fall. The old Garden was demolished in 1998.

Is the Boston Arena still standing?

Not for much longer. Known since 1982 as Matthews Arena and owned by Northeastern University, it was the oldest arena in use for ice hockey when it closed in December 2025. Northeastern began taking it down in 2026 to build a new facility.

Where do the Bruins play now?

At TD Garden in Boston, above North Station. It opened in 1995, seats 17,850 for hockey and is shared with the Celtics.
