New York Jets Stadium History: Every Home Since 1960

The Jets began as the Titans of New York in 1960, playing at the aging Polo Grounds in upper Manhattan. Renamed in 1963, they moved to Shea Stadium in Queens the next year, then to New Jersey’s Meadowlands in 1984, where they have shared a stadium with the Giants ever since.

Here is every home in order, with the years the Jets played there, what made each one matter and what stands on the site today. Each stadium links to our full guide.

Jets Stadium FAQ

Where did the Jets play before MetLife Stadium?

At Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, from 1984 through 2009, as tenants of the Giants. Before that they played at Shea Stadium in Queens (1964–1983) and, as the Titans of New York and then the Jets, at the Polo Grounds (1960–1963).

How many stadiums have the Jets had?

Four: the Polo Grounds, Shea Stadium, Giants Stadium and MetLife Stadium.

Why did the Jets leave Shea Stadium?

The Mets had first use of Shea each fall, so the Jets often had to open the season on the road, and the team received no money from parking. Owner Leon Hess wanted the city to expand the stadium and rework the lease, talks with Mayor Ed Koch stalled, and the Jets played their last game at Shea on December 10, 1983.

Is Shea Stadium still standing?

No. Shea was demolished in 2008–09 after Citi Field opened next door, and its home plate, pitcher’s mound and bases are marked in the Citi Field parking lot. The Polo Grounds were torn down in 1964, and Giants Stadium in 2010.

Where do the Jets play now?

At MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which the Jets and Giants built as a 50–50 joint venture. It opened in 2010, seats 82,500 and hosted Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014.
