Bills Stadium FAQ

Where did the Bills play before the new Highmark Stadium?

Across the street, at the stadium that opened in 1973 as Rich Stadium and was later called Ralph Wilson Stadium, New Era Field, Bills Stadium and Highmark Stadium. The Bills played there from 1973 through the 2025 season. Their first home, from 1960 to 1972, was War Memorial Stadium on Buffalo’s East Side.

How many stadiums have the Bills had?

Three: War Memorial Stadium, Ralph Wilson Stadium (under its several names) and the new Highmark Stadium.

Why did the Bills leave War Memorial Stadium?

The Rockpile was run down and held fewer than 47,000 fans, and after the 1970 AFL–NFL merger the league required at least 50,000 seats. Owner Ralph Wilson looked at moving the team, possibly to Seattle, so Erie County approved bonds and built the stadium in Orchard Park, which opened in 1973.

Is War Memorial Stadium still standing?

No. It was demolished in 1989, a few years after the movie The Natural was filmed there. The Johnnie B. Wiley Amateur Athletic Sports Pavilion, a high school athletic field, now stands on the site and keeps the old stadium’s entrances. Ralph Wilson Stadium was demolished in 2026.

Where do the Bills play now?

At Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, which opened in 2026. The $2.2 billion stadium has 60,108 seats and a total capacity of 63,000, with a canopy that covers most seats but leaves the field open to Buffalo weather.
