Falcons Stadium FAQ

Where did the Falcons play before Mercedes-Benz Stadium?

At the Georgia Dome, from 1992 through the 2016 season. Before that they spent their first 26 seasons, 1966–1991, at Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium, which they shared with the Braves.

How many stadiums have the Falcons had?

Three: Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium, the Georgia Dome and Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Why did the Falcons leave the Georgia Dome?

The Dome was a profitable building, but the Falcons grew unhappy with it less than two decades after it opened and began planning a replacement. The Atlanta City Council approved the new stadium in March 2013, ground was broken in May 2014 and Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened for the 2017 season. The Dome was demolished that November.

Is Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium still standing?

No. It was imploded on August 2, 1997, after the Braves moved to Turner Field. A parking lot built for Turner Field covers the site, with the outline of the old stadium marked in it, and the monument to Hank Aaron’s 715th home run still stands where the ball landed. The Georgia Dome site is now a park, The Home Depot Backyard.

Where do the Falcons play now?

At Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The retractable roof stadium opened in 2017, seats 71,000 for football and is shared with Atlanta United of MLS.
