Portland Trail Blazers Arena History: Every Home Since 1970

The Trail Blazers have played in Portland since they joined the NBA in 1970, and both of their homes sit side by side in the Rose Quarter: the Memorial Coliseum, where they won the 1977 title, and the Moda Center, built on the Coliseum’s parking lot and opened in 1995.

Here are both homes in order, with the years the Blazers played there, what made each one matter and what stands there today. Each arena with a ThrillZing guide links to it.

Trail Blazers Arena FAQ

Where did the Trail Blazers play before the Moda Center?

At the Memorial Coliseum, next door, from 1970 to 1995. Three NBA Finals were played there: 1977, when the Blazers won the title in Game 6 at home, and 1990 and 1992. The Detroit Pistons were the only visiting team to win a championship in the building, in 1990.

How many arenas have the Trail Blazers had?

Two: the Memorial Coliseum (1970–1995) and the Moda Center (1995–present), which was called the Rose Garden until 2013. The Blazers have returned to the Coliseum for preseason games, including one in 2019 for their 50th season.

Why was the Moda Center built?

By the 1980s the 12,888-seat Coliseum was too small for the NBA, and the Blazers had sold out every game since 1977. Owner Paul Allen formed the Oregon Arena Corporation in 1991 to build a new arena on the Coliseum’s parking lot, close to MAX light rail. Construction began in 1993, and the $262 million arena opened on October 12, 1995.

Is the Memorial Coliseum still standing?

Yes. Renamed the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in 2011, the glass-and-concrete building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 and is home to the Portland Winterhawks junior hockey team.

Where do the Trail Blazers play now?

At the Moda Center in the Rose Quarter, which seats 19,393 for basketball. Tom Dundon bought the team from Paul Allen’s estate in March 2026, and in August 2026 the Portland City Council approved terms for renovating the arena as talks on a new 20-year lease began.
