Boston Celtics Arena History: Every Home Since 1946

The Celtics have stayed in Boston since their first season in 1946, and in all that time they have had only three home arenas. They split their early home games between the Boston Arena and Boston Garden, played at the Garden alone through 1995, and have played at TD Garden ever since.

Here is every home in order, with the years the Celtics played there, what made each one matter and what stands on the site today. Each arena with a ThrillZing guide links to it.

At Boston Garden, from their first season in 1946 through 1994–95. For their first nine seasons they also played many home games at the Boston Arena on St. Botolph Street, where they played their first home game on November 5, 1946.

How many arenas have the Celtics had?

Three: the Boston Arena (1946–1955), Boston Garden (1946–1995) and TD Garden (since 1995). All 16 of the franchise’s titles from 1957 to 1986 came in the Boston Garden years.

Why did the Celtics leave Boston Garden?

Is Boston Garden still standing?

No. It was demolished in 1998, and The Hub on Causeway now stands on the site. The Boston Arena, renamed Matthews Arena in 1982, lasted much longer: it closed in December 2025, and Northeastern University began demolishing it in March 2026 to build a new arena.

Where do the Celtics play now?
