Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is a 135-acre theme park in Vallejo, California, located along Interstate 80 between San Francisco and Sacramento. The park traces its roots back to 1968, when it opened in Redwood City as Marine World, a marine-life exhibition park. It relocated to its current Vallejo site in 1986, and after being acquired by Six Flags in 1999 and rebranded several times, it took its current name, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, in 2007.

What sets the park apart from most Six Flags properties is its combination of thrill rides with a genuine zoological and marine-life collection. Alongside roller coasters and flat rides, guests can see dolphins, sea lions, sharks, tigers, giraffes, and other animals in areas like Dolphin Harbor, Shark Experience, and Odin’s Tiger Island, a legacy of the park’s origins as Marine World.

The Ride Experience

The park’s coaster lineup includes Medusa, a Bolliger & Mabillard looping coaster known for its 150-foot first drop and inversions including a vertical loop, dive loop, and Zero-G roll. Superman: Ultimate Flight sends riders through what the park describes as the tallest roller coaster inversion west of the Mississippi River. The Joker, added in 2016, is a Rocky Mountain Construction hybrid conversion, while Kong and Flash: Vertical Velocity add inverted and boomerang-style layouts to the mix.

Marine and Wildlife Attractions

Discovery Kingdom’s animal exhibits are a direct link to its Marine World heritage. Dolphin Harbor and the Shark Experience let guests view marine species up close, while Odin’s Tiger Island and other habitats showcase big cats and other land animals. This mix of zoological exhibits and thrill rides makes the park distinct among Six Flags’ otherwise ride-focused portfolio on the West Coast.
