Lotte World is a sprawling entertainment complex in the Jamsil neighborhood of Seoul’s Songpa District, combining a colossal indoor theme park with an outdoor island park, a shopping mall, a luxury hotel, and an observation tower under one destination. Opened by Lotte Corporation on July 12, 1989, with the outdoor Magic Island section following in March 1990, it was built around the idea that a South Korean theme park should never have to close for rain or winter cold.
The indoor Adventure section alone spans roughly 128,000 square meters, giving Lotte World a reputation as one of the largest indoor theme parks anywhere. Beyond thrill rides, the complex houses an Olympic-sized ice rink, a Korean folk museum, an aquarium, and a KidZania branch, making it as much a year-round leisure destination for Seoul residents as a tourist stop. In 2023, it drew about 5.1 million visitors, ranking among the world’s top 25 most-attended theme parks.

The Ride Experience
Lotte World’s indoor Adventure hall houses rides beneath a domed glass roof, letting families ride coasters and drop towers regardless of weather. Atlantis Adventure, an Intamin-built Aqua Trax steel coaster that opened in 2003, is the park’s signature thrill ride, reaching about 75 km/h (46.6 mph) along roughly 670 meters of track themed to a lost underwater city. Other coasters include French Revolution and Comet Express, while Magic Island’s outdoor Gyro Drop and Gyro Swing add tower and pendulum thrills with views over the adjoining lake.
Inside, the park’s basement-level ice rink measures 36 by 65 meters, one of the largest indoor rinks in Korea, and daily parades run through the Adventure hall’s central atrium, with an expanded ‘World of Light’ parade introduced in 2024.
More Than a Theme Park
Lotte World sits within a larger complex that includes a department store, a luxury hotel, a Korean folk museum tracing the country’s history, and an aquarium, allowing visitors to spend a full day without leaving the building. Its Magic Island section, an outdoor park built around an artificial lake, mixes traditional European-castle theming with additional rides and seasonal festivals.
The park has become a fixture of Seoul tourism precisely because of its indoor-outdoor hybrid design, letting it operate year-round without seasonal closures common at open-air parks.
