Disneyland Paris opened on April 12, 1992, in Marne-la-Vallee, about 20 miles east of central Paris, becoming the first Disney resort built in Europe. Originally launched as Euro Disney Resort, the property struggled financially in its early years before growing into the continent’s leading theme park destination under full Walt Disney Company ownership since 2017.
The resort sits on roughly 2,100 hectares (5,200 acres) of land, though only about half has been developed so far. It centers on two gated theme parks, Disneyland Park and the newly reimagined Disney Adventure World (formerly Walt Disney Studios Park), surrounded by seven Disney-owned hotels, a shopping and entertainment district, and two golf courses.

Two Parks, One Resort
Disneyland Park, the original gate, opened with 29 attractions in 1992 and is anchored by Le Chateau de la Belle au Bois Dormant, a 50-meter Sleeping Beauty Castle designed to evoke the fairy-tale look of European castles rather than a single real-world model. Classic Disney lands like Discoveryland, Fantasyland, and Frontierland fill out the park, alongside long-running favorites such as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Space Mountain: De la Terre a la Lune.
The resort’s second gate opened in 2002 as Walt Disney Studios Park with a movie-production theme that never fully resonated with guests, prompting a major overhaul. The park has since been rebranded Disney Adventure World, with a sweeping expansion touching most of its offerings, including the new World of Frozen land and Avengers Campus, home to the Spider-Man W.E.B Adventure ride.
From Financial Struggle to Europe’s Top Draw
Euro Disney Resort’s opening was rocky: high costs, cultural friction, and heavy debt pushed the venture toward near-collapse in its first decade, requiring multiple financial restructurings through the 1990s and 2000s. The resort was renamed Disneyland Resort Paris in 2002 and settled on Disneyland Paris in 2009 as attendance steadily improved.
Disney took full ownership of the resort in 2017 and has since poured billions of euros into renovations and new attractions. By 2022, the resort had welcomed more than 375 million cumulative visitors, and it remains Europe’s single most-visited theme park destination, with a multi-year expansion plan continuing to reshape the property.
