Busch Gardens Williamsburg opened on May 16, 1975, on 422 acres in James City County, Virginia, just minutes from Colonial Williamsburg. Originally branded as ‘Busch Gardens: The Old Country’, the park was designed around ten European-themed hamlets representing England, Scotland, France, Germany, Ireland, and Italy — a concept that set it apart from other regional parks of the era.

Now operated by United Parks & Resorts, the park has grown into one of the East Coast’s most acclaimed theme park destinations, featuring 11 roller coasters alongside its famously manicured grounds. Busch Gardens Williamsburg has been voted the World’s Most Beautiful Theme Park by the National Amusement Park Historical Association for more than 29 consecutive years, a distinction no other park has matched.

World-Class Coasters in a European Setting

Busch Gardens Williamsburg’s coaster lineup spans decades of ride engineering. Loch Ness Monster, which debuted in 1978 from Arrow Development, remains one of the longest-operating looping coasters in North America and is notable for its interlocking loops. Alpengeist (Bolliger & Mabillard, 1997) is one of the tallest inverted coasters in the world with six inversions, while Apollo’s Chariot (B&M, 1999) was a landmark hypercoaster in its day.

Pantheon, which opened in March 2022 from Intamin, anchors the modern era of the park’s lineup. Standing 178 feet tall and reaching 73 mph through four launches, it features a 95-degree beyond-vertical drop and two inversions across 3,328 feet of track. The park also operates DarKoaster, North America’s first all-indoor straddle coaster, and in 2026 rethemed the launched coaster Verbolten — now called Verbolten: Forbidden Turn — with new animatronics, visual effects, and an updated storyline.

The World’s Most Beautiful Theme Park

Beyond its coasters, Busch Gardens Williamsburg is celebrated for its horticultural beauty and Broadway-caliber live entertainment. The park’s landscaping has earned the Golden Ticket Award for Best Landscaping from Amusement Today for over two decades, and NAPHA has consistently voted it the World’s Most Beautiful Theme Park for more than 29 consecutive years — a record unmatched in the industry.

The European village concept means each of the park’s ten hamlets offers distinct architecture, cuisine, and entertainment. From the Tudor-style buildings of England to the Oktoberfest atmosphere of Germany, the immersive theming across every area creates an experience that feels unlike any other American theme park.
