Narendra Modi Stadium sits in the Motera district of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and holds the title of the world’s largest cricket stadium, with a capacity of about 132,000 spectators. It rose on the same riverside site as the old Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium, which was demolished in 2015 after decades hosting World Cup matches, and reopened as an entirely new venue designed by the sports architecture firm Populous and built by Larsen & Toubro.
The ground first opened to the public in February 2020 for the ‘Namaste Trump’ event and was formally inaugurated a year later in February 2021. Since then it has become one of the biggest stages in world cricket, hosting the 2023 Cricket World Cup final, IPL finals, and India’s home matches, while also serving as the base for IPL franchise Gujarat Titans and WPL side Gujarat Giants.

The Ride Experience
Spread across roughly 63 acres, the stadium’s circular bowl design was engineered so that every one of its seats has an unobstructed view of the field, a rarity at a venue of this scale. Four entry clubhouses, dozens of food and beverage stalls, and parking for thousands of vehicles support the massive crowds that fill the ground on big match days.
Beyond cricket, the stadium’s scale has made it a natural home for other mega-events, including India’s largest-attended concerts; a Coldplay show there drew a reported crowd of nearly 112,000, underscoring just how much space the venue can hold.
A Storied Ground Reborn
The site has hosted international cricket since long before its current incarnation. The earlier Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium on the same grounds staged matches during the 1987, 1996, and 2011 Cricket World Cups before being torn down and rebuilt into the modern structure that stands today.
That history, combined with hosting a Cricket World Cup final in 2023 and its role as an IPL final venue, has cemented Narendra Modi Stadium’s place as one of the sport’s premier arenas barely a few years after its reconstruction was completed.
