Adventure Island Tampa is a 30-acre water park located in Tampa, Florida, directly across the street from Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. Opened on June 7, 1980, the park grew from an original 7 acres into one of Florida’s most-visited water attractions through near-yearly expansions across the 1980s and 1990s, eventually reaching its current footprint of 30 acres.

Now operated by United Parks & Resorts, Adventure Island is home to several industry milestones, including Rapids Racer — the world’s first slide featuring a dueling saucer section — and Riptide, Florida’s original four-lane racing mat slide. The park’s 17,000-square-foot Endless Surf wave pool, multiple speed slides, a lazy river, and dedicated children’s zones make it an all-day destination for guests of every age.

Rides and Attractions

Adventure Island’s slide lineup ranges from mild to record-setting. Riptide brought Florida its first four-lane racing mat slide, while Rapids Racer — a ProSlide dueling racer — claimed a global first with its head-to-head saucer element. Other major slides include Caribbean Corkscrew, Colossal Curl, Solar Vortex, Vanish Point, Aruba Tuba, Calypso Coaster, and the enclosed Water Moccasin. Wahoo Remix, an upgrade of the former Wahoo Run, was revamped with LED lighting and synchronized sound for a nighttime-capable experience.

Beyond the slides, Endless Surf provides a 17,000-square-foot wave pool where riders catch three-foot waves, while Rambling Bayou offers a relaxed lazy river loop. Fabian’s Fun Port and Castaway Falls serve as dedicated splash zones for younger guests. On select summer evenings, the park hosts AquaGlow, a nighttime event with illuminated attractions and after-dark ride access.

History and Ownership

Adventure Island opened in 1980 as part of Busch Entertainment Corporation, an Anheuser-Busch subsidiary, and was developed alongside the neighboring Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. The park expanded steadily through successive decades, adding new slides and attractions almost every year through the mid-1990s before settling into its current 30-acre footprint.

In 2009, the Blackstone Group acquired Busch Entertainment Corporation for approximately $2.7 billion and rebranded the portfolio as SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. In February 2024, SeaWorld Entertainment renamed itself United Parks & Resorts, the banner under which Adventure Island operates today. The company has continued to invest in the Tampa properties, with enhancements planned for Adventure Island as part of a broader capital commitment.
