Hyperion is a steel hyper coaster built by Swiss manufacturer Intamin, located at Energylandia in Zator, Poland. It opened on 14 July 2018 and quickly established itself as one of Europe’s most intense rides, soaring to 77 metres (253 ft) and reaching a top speed of 142 km/h (88 mph) along 1,450 metres (4,760 ft) of track.

Themed to a fictional research mission to Saturn’s moon Hyperion, the ride sends trains through an 85-degree plunging drop into a tunnel, over towering airtime hills, and through a single inversion before returning to the station. As of 2021, Hyperion holds the record as the tallest, fastest, and longest roller coaster in Poland, as well as the tallest coaster in the world to feature an inversion.

The Ride Experience

Riders board one of two seven-car trains, each seating four across for a total of 28 passengers, before being hauled up the 77-metre chain lift. At the crest, the track tilts to a near-vertical 85 degrees and plunges riders into an underground tunnel at close to 142 km/h. The layout that follows is packed with ejector airtime hills that lift riders violently out of their seats, a sweeping over-banked curve, and a single towering inversion that rounds out the circuit before the brakes. The combination of raw height, extreme speed, and sustained airtime has earned Hyperion a reputation as one of the finest Intamin products in Europe.

The ride’s space-exploration theme adds atmosphere without overshadowing the hardware. Trains are finished in blue, white, and black to evoke a spacecraft aesthetic, and the on-ride tunnel reinforces the sense of diving into the unknown. With a throughput of around 1,300 riders per hour across its two trains, Hyperion remains the headline attraction at Energylandia.

Records and Legacy

When Hyperion debuted in 2018, it immediately became the benchmark coaster in Central and Eastern Europe. Its 77-metre height made it the tallest coaster in Poland, its 142 km/h top speed the fastest, and its 1,450-metre layout the longest — a clean triple record within a single country. The ride also claimed the global distinction of being the tallest roller coaster anywhere in the world to include at least one inversion, a niche but impressive statistic that highlights how Intamin pushed the design envelope.

Hyperion’s arrival at the rapidly expanding Energylandia resort signalled the park’s ambition to compete with Western European theme parks. Since its opening, the park has continued to add major coasters, but Hyperion has retained its status as the park’s must-ride experience and a compelling reason for enthusiasts to make the journey to southern Poland.
