Flight of the Hippogriff is a steel family roller coaster located in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida. Built by Vekoma on the footprint of the park’s original Flying Unicorn coaster, it opened in its current Harry Potter theming on June 18, 2010, becoming one of the signature attractions of the Wizarding World expansion.

Standing 42.7 feet tall with 1,099 feet of track, the coaster reaches a top speed of 28.5 mph as it sweeps through banked turns above the rooftops of Hogsmeade. Its queue winds past Hagrid’s Hut, where riders bow to an animatronic Hippogriff before boarding — a nod to the lesson in respect Hagrid teaches in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The ride’s success led to near-identical installations at Universal Studios Japan (2014), Universal Studios Hollywood (2016), and Universal Studios Beijing (2021).

The Ride Experience

The journey begins in a queue that meanders through the grounds surrounding Hagrid’s Hut. Before boarding, guests are asked to bow to a life-sized animatronic Hippogriff — proper respect is required, as Hagrid will remind you. Once seated, the train climbs the lift hill to its 42.7-foot peak, delivering sweeping aerial views of Hogsmeade village and the towering facade of Hogwarts castle.

The descent sends riders through swooping dips and banked turns at up to 28.5 mph, covering the 1,099-foot course in just over a minute. With zero inversions, the ride is approachable for first-time coaster riders while still delivering genuine excitement. A recording of Hagrid’s voice bids guests farewell as the train glides back to the station.

A Global Wizarding World Icon

The Orlando installation served as the template for a franchise of themed coasters across Universal’s international parks. Universal Studios Japan opened its Vekoma version in July 2014, followed by Universal Studios Hollywood in April 2016 with a slightly shorter Mack Rides Youngstar Coaster — the first outdoor coaster at that park and the first Mack Youngstar in the United States. Universal Studios Beijing added its own version in September 2021.

Each iteration preserves the same Hagrid’s-lesson-in-flying storyline and Hippogriff bow ritual, making the attraction a recognizable anchor of the Wizarding World experience worldwide. The Orlando original remains the longest-running of the four, carrying riders past the Hogsmeade skyline for more than a decade.
