Jurassic World VelociCoaster is a launched steel roller coaster at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida, built on the site of the former Triceratops Encounter attraction. Manufactured by Intamin and opened to the public on June 10, 2021, it was designed to put riders in the middle of a velociraptor hunt, complete with an animatronic raptor paddock riders pass through before boarding.
The ride uses twin LSM launches to become one of the fastest coasters in any Universal park, reaching 70 mph before sending trains up a 155-foot top hat and down a steep 140-foot drop, part of a layout built around near-miss elements themed to the Jurassic World film franchise. Unlike many hypercoasters of its scale, VelociCoaster uses only lap bar restraints, emphasizing the sensation of speed and airtime throughout the layout.

The Ride Experience
Riders queue through a raptor containment area featuring animatronic dinosaurs before boarding trains that launch from 0 to 50 mph in about 2 seconds. A second launch pushes speeds from 40 to 70 mph in roughly 2.4 seconds, sending the train up a 155-foot top hat element for a moment of weightlessness at the peak.
The layout includes a 140-foot drop at an 80-degree angle and four inversions, including a barrel roll positioned directly over the lagoon separating Jurassic Park from the rest of the park. Sections of track are built to pass close to the raptor paddock’s rockwork, reinforcing the ride’s theme of being chased through the dinosaurs’ territory.
Records and Reception
At the time of its debut, VelociCoaster was the tallest, fastest, and longest coaster at Universal Orlando Resort, and it has been consistently ranked among the top steel coasters in the world by enthusiast polls since opening. Its use of lap bars rather than shoulder harnesses was a deliberate design choice by Intamin and Universal Creative to heighten the sense of speed on the drops and airtime hills.
The coaster replaced Triceratops Encounter, a walk-through animatronic attraction that closed in 2018 to make way for the expanded Jurassic World-themed area, reflecting Universal’s broader shift toward pairing intense thrill rides with immersive film-based theming.
