Disney California Adventure opened on February 8, 2001, next door to the original Disneyland as part of the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. Operated by the Walt Disney Company, the 72-acre park was built as a tribute to California itself, organizing its lands around the state’s landscapes, boardwalks, and Hollywood glamour before later folding in deeper Pixar and Marvel theming.

After a lukewarm start, Disney poured roughly $1.1 billion into re-imagining the park during the 2000s and early 2010s, adding Cars Land, an overhauled entrance, and new nighttime spectaculars. Attendance jumped sharply following that expansion, and the park now regularly ranks among the most visited theme parks in the world, pulling in around 10 million guests in 2024.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Anaheim, California

Operator: The Walt Disney Company

Opened: February 8, 2001

Size: 72 acres

Annual visitors: About 10 million (2024)

Signature attraction: Radiator Springs Racers

The Ride Experience

The park’s marquee attraction, Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land, reportedly cost around $200 million to build and remains one of the most elaborate theme park rides ever constructed, sending guests on a scenic desert drive that turns into a competitive race. Nearby, the Incredicoaster launches riders through a family-friendly but high-speed course themed to Pixar’s The Incredibles, while Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! reimagined the former Tower of Terror into a Marvel-themed free-fall adventure inside the Collector’s fortress.

Beyond the thrill rides, the park balances its lineup with immersive experiences like Soarin’ Around the World, the river-rafting Grizzly River Run, and Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure, giving visitors of nearly every age and comfort level something to ride.

From California Tribute to Pixar Playground

Disney California Adventure’s original 2001 layout leaned heavily on real California imagery, from a scaled Golden Gate Bridge to a boardwalk styled after Santa Cruz. That approach struggled to match Disneyland’s storytelling next door, prompting Disney’s major mid-2000s overhaul that introduced Cars Land, Pixar Pier, and Avengers Campus in the years since, layering beloved franchises onto the park’s California foundation.

Today the park is organized into eight themed lands across its 72 acres, including Buena Vista Street, Hollywood Land, Grizzly Peak, Cars Land, San Fransokyo Square, Paradise Gardens Park, Pixar Pier, and Avengers Campus, and its steady attendance growth since the expansion has made it a cornerstone of the Disneyland Resort alongside its original neighbor.

Nigloland is a family-owned theme park in Dolancourt, in France’s Aube department, that opened in 1987. Founded by brothers Patrice and Philippe Gélis, former carnival operators who drew inspiration from a trip to Walt Disney World, the park takes its name from its hedgehog mascot, Niglo. Since opening, it has grown into one of the most-visited theme parks in France, regularly ranking among the country’s top attractions alongside Disneyland Paris and Parc Astérix.

Spread across roughly 40 hectares (about 99 acres), Nigloland is organized into themed lands including a Canadian village, a rock ‘n’ roll village, a magical village, and a Swiss village. The park set an attendance record in 2022 with around 763,000 visitors. Its ride lineup blends family-friendly attractions with several notable thrill rides, anchored by the towering Le Donjon de l’Extrême drop tower and the steel coaster Alpina Blitz.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Dolancourt, Aube, France

Operator: SARL Gélis Frères (Gélis family)

Opened: 1987

Size: About 40 hectares (99 acres)

Annual Visitors: About 763,000 (2022 record)

Signature Coaster: Alpina Blitz (Mack Rides, opened 2014)

Tallest Attraction: Le Donjon de l’Extrême drop tower, about 100 m (328 ft)

The Ride Experience

Nigloland’s coaster lineup is built around Mack Rides hardware. Alpina Blitz, a mega coaster that opened in 2014, reaches about 108 feet tall with a top speed near 52 mph along roughly 2,360 feet of track. The park also operates Gold Mine Train, a Mack Rides powered coaster dating to 1992, and Spatiale Expérience, an indoor steel coaster styled after a space voyage. Krampus Expédition, a Mack Rides water coaster, adds a splashdown finale to the ride roster. For sheer scale, Le Donjon de l’Extrême drop tower stands around 100 meters tall, making it one of the tallest attractions of its kind in France.

A Family Business With a Long History

Unlike many major European parks backed by large corporations, Nigloland has remained under the ownership of the Gélis family since it opened. In 1993 the park expanded significantly by acquiring rides and equipment from the closed Parc de la Toison d’Or in Dijon, which helped build out its magical village area. The park continues to invest in new attractions, with a Mack Rides Stryker coaster called Supersonic 1887 announced for a future opening.

Galaxyland is an indoor amusement park inside West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, operated by the Triple Five Group. It opened on August 17, 1983 as Fantasyland, but a 1994 court ruling over Disney’s trademark on the name forced a rebrand, and the park relaunched as Galaxyland with a space-themed overhaul in 1995. Since December 2022 it has operated as ‘Galaxyland Powered by Hasbro’ following a multi-year renovation that reimagined many attractions around Hasbro toy brands.

Guinness World Records recognizes Galaxyland as the largest indoor amusement park in the world, covering roughly 400,000 square feet (about 37,200 square meters) under the mall’s roof. For decades its signature ride was the Mindbender, a Schwarzkopf-built triple-loop steel coaster that stood as the world’s tallest indoor coaster until it was decommissioned in January 2023, with a Hasbro Nerf-themed coaster planned to eventually take its place.

Stats at a Glance

Location: West Edmonton Mall, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Operator: Triple Five Group

Opened: August 17, 1983 (as Fantasyland; renamed Galaxyland in 1995)

Size: About 400,000 sq ft (37,200 m²)

Rides & Attractions: 27+ rides and attractions

World Record: Guinness World Record for largest indoor amusement park

Signature Attraction: Space Shot drop tower; former Mindbender triple-loop coaster (closed 2023)

The Ride Experience

Galaxyland’s rides span three tiers of intensity, from gentle spinning teacup-style attractions for young children to thrill rides like the Space Shot, a drop tower that stood as the world’s tallest indoor tower ride when it opened. For 37 years the park’s centerpiece was the Mindbender, a Schwarzkopf-manufactured triple-loop steel coaster reaching about 145 feet, which drew riders as the tallest indoor roller coaster on the planet before its closure in January 2023.

Since 2019, West Edmonton Mall has partnered with Hasbro to retheme much of the park, giving classic rides new identities tied to brands like Monopoly, Hungry Hippos, My Little Pony, and Mr. Potato Head, alongside the 2018-opened Havoc thrill ride.

A Mall Landmark With a Complicated Name

Galaxyland’s history is tied directly to the identity of West Edmonton Mall itself. It opened in 1983 as Fantasyland, but Disney successfully argued in court that the name infringed on its own Fantasyland at Disneyland, forcing the Edmonton park to rebrand. The switch to a galactic, space-station theme in 1995 gave the park its current name and aesthetic, which has persisted through subsequent renovations.

The park has also weathered tragedy: a fatal 1986 derailment on the Mindbender killed three riders, prompting new safety systems that remained part of the ride’s operation for the rest of its run.

<button

Galaxyland FAQs

Is Galaxyland really the largest indoor amusement park in the world?

Yes. Guinness World Records officially recognizes Galaxyland, at roughly 400,000 square feet inside West Edmonton Mall, as the largest indoor amusement park on Earth.

Why was Galaxyland originally called Fantasyland?

The park opened under the name Fantasyland in 1983, but after a legal dispute with Disney over the trademarked name, it was rebranded to Galaxyland in 1995 with a new space theme.

Is the Mindbender roller coaster still open?

No. The Mindbender, once the world’s tallest indoor roller coaster, was decommissioned in January 2023 after 37 years; its trains were sold to Indiana Beach in Indiana, and a Hasbro Nerf-themed replacement coaster has been planned for the site.

Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park sits atop Iron Mountain above Glenwood Springs, Colorado, combining a historic cave system with a mountaintop amusement park. The caves were first opened to the public in 1895 after Charles W. Darrow discovered the entrance, then closed during World War I and remained shuttered for decades before reopening in 1999 under owners Steve and Jeanne Beckley.

Reachable only by the Glenwood Gondola, an aerial tramway that climbs roughly 1,300 feet over 4,300 feet of cable, the park pairs guided cave tours through the historic Fairy Caves with cliffside thrill rides overlooking Glenwood Canyon and the Colorado River nearly 1,400 feet below. Its centerpiece, the Cliffhanger roller coaster, is recognized as the highest-elevation full-size roller coaster in the United States.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Operator: Steve and Jeanne Beckley

Opened: 1999 (caves first opened 1895)

Elevation: 7,160 feet above sea level

Access: Glenwood Gondola, 4,300 ft tramway, 1,300 ft elevation gain

Attractions: 10 rides including 3 roller coasters

Signature attraction: Cliffhanger roller coaster

A Cave Turned Thrill Park

The park’s story begins underground. Charles W. Darrow found the cave entrance on Iron Mountain in the late 1800s and opened it as a public attraction, the Fairy Caves, in 1895. The caves closed around the start of World War I and sat dormant for more than 80 years until new owners restored access and reopened the site in 1999, eventually adding rides and building out the modern adventure park.

Today guests still take guided tours through the historic cave passages, including the King’s Row room, kept at a constant 52°F year-round, before heading outside to the park’s mountaintop ride lineup.

Rides on the Edge of Glenwood Canyon

The park’s three roller coasters include Cliffhanger, a steel coaster built by S&MC on its Hurricane model that opened in 2012 after being relocated from a Missouri amusement park. Perched on the hillside above Glenwood Canyon, it’s billed as the highest-elevation full-size roller coaster in the country.

Beyond the coasters, the park’s Giant Canyon Swing, Alpine Coaster, and Glenwood Canyon Flyer all take advantage of the site’s dramatic canyon-rim setting, making the ride experience as much about the view as the thrill.

Oakwood Theme Park was Wales’s largest theme park, set across about 80 acres of hilly woodland at Canaston Bridge near Narberth, Pembrokeshire. It opened on 14 April 1987 as a small family-run attraction under the McNamara family before growing into a major regional draw, later passing to Spanish operator Aspro Parks in 2008.

The park’s signature ride was Megafobia, a wooden coaster built by Custom Coasters International in 1996 and long ranked among Europe’s finest wooden coasters. It was later joined by Speed: No Limits, a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter that briefly held the world record for steepest coaster drop. After nearly four decades in operation, Aspro Parks announced Oakwood’s permanent closure in March 2025, citing rising operating costs and falling visitor numbers, and its rides were subsequently sold off and dismantled.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Canaston Bridge, Narberth, Pembrokeshire, Wales

Operator: Aspro Parks (2008–2025); previously the McNamara family (1987–2008)

Opened: 14 April 1987

Closed: 4 March 2025

Size: About 80 acres

Annual visitors: Over 400,000 (peak of around 500,000)

Signature attraction: Megafobia wooden coaster (Custom Coasters International, 1996)

The Ride Experience

Megafobia was Oakwood’s crown jewel, an 85-foot-tall wooden twister coaster stretching nearly 2,956 feet, reaching speeds of about 48 mph with no inversions. Designed with John Wardley’s input, it was the most recent wooden coaster built in the UK until Alton Towers’ Wicker Man opened in 2018, and it underwent a £1.5 million partial retrack by The Gravity Group in 2023.

Speed: No Limits, added in 2006, was the UK’s first Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter, launching riders through a near-vertical 97-degree first drop that made it briefly the steepest coaster on Earth. Other attractions included the Vertigo skycoaster, the Bounce drop tower, and the Hydro log flume, giving the park a mix of thrills for families and enthusiasts alike.

Closure and Legacy

Oakwood’s closure was announced on 4 March 2025 after a strategic review by owner Aspro Parks, which pointed to unrelenting economic pressures including energy costs, ride maintenance expenses, and declining attendance. The park did not reopen for the 2025 season.

Following the announcement, several rides were sold rather than scrapped; Speed: No Limits was relocated to Walygator Sud-Ouest in France. For 38 years, Oakwood had been a cornerstone of Welsh tourism and the country’s only major theme park, and its closure marked the end of an era for coaster enthusiasts across the UK.

Walibi Belgium sits on 64 hectares of parkland in Wavre, Walloon Brabant, just outside Brussels, and has been a fixture of Belgian family entertainment since entrepreneur Eddy Meeus opened it on July 26, 1975. Over five decades the park has changed hands and names several times, briefly operating as Six Flags Belgium in the early 2000s before Palamon Capital Partners restored the Walibi branding in 2005. Today it’s owned by Compagnie des Alpes, the same group behind several other Walibi parks across Europe.

The park draws roughly 1.45 million visitors a year, making it one of Belgium’s most popular attractions. Its ride lineup spans decades of coaster design, from the wooden Loup Garou and the suspended looping Vampire to the modern Intamin megacoaster Kondaa, which opened in 2021 as the tallest and fastest coaster in the Benelux region. The adjoining Aqualibi indoor water park gives visitors a cool-down option regardless of the weather.

The Ride Experience

Kondaa headlines the park’s coaster collection with a 164-foot first drop and a top speed near 70 mph across roughly 3,937 feet of track, including a non-inverting cobra roll element and multiple airtime hills. Riders can also seek out Loup Garou, a wooden coaster, and Vampire, an older suspended looping design that has been a park staple for years. In 2025 Walibi Belgium added Mecalodon, a launch coaster, further expanding its thrill-ride roster alongside family attractions and the Aqualibi water park next door.

A Park That Changed Names More Than Once

Walibi Belgium’s history traces an unusually winding ownership path for a European theme park. It opened simply as Walibi in 1975, became Walibi Wavre in 1982, then was rebranded Six Flags Belgium from 2001 to 2004 after Premier Parks took a controlling stake. Palamon Capital Partners reverted it to Walibi Belgium in 2005, and Compagnie des Alpes has operated it since, folding it into its broader network of European Walibi-branded parks.

Yomiuriland is a sprawling amusement park built into the hills straddling Inagi, Tokyo, and Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It opened on March 19, 1964, and is owned and operated by Yomiuriland Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings media group. Over six decades the park has grown into one of the Tokyo area’s largest amusement destinations, offering around 44 rides and attractions across its terraced, wooded terrain.

The park’s hillside layout gives it a distinct character among Japanese amusement parks, with coasters and flumes weaving through natural elevation changes rather than flat midways. Yomiuriland is also known for its seasonal programming, including a springtime display of roughly 1,000 cherry blossom trees, a summer water park called Pool WAI, and the Jewellumination winter LED light show. The park additionally hosts Yomiuri Giants Stadium, which opened in 1985 and served as the Yomiuri Giants baseball team’s training and farm-team home for decades, a role it continued until Giants Town Stadium opened nearby in Inagi in March 2025.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Inagi, Tokyo / Tama-ku, Kawasaki, Japan

Operator: Yomiuriland Co., Ltd. (Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings)

Opened: March 19, 1964

Attractions: About 44 rides and attractions

Signature ride: Bandit (Togo steel coaster, opened 1988)

Notable neighbor: Yomiuri Giants Stadium (opened 1985)

The Ride Experience

Yomiuriland’s headline thrill ride is Bandit, a Togo-built Super Roller Coaster that opened in 1988. Built into the park’s hillside, Bandit briefly held the world speed record for a roller coaster at 68.4 mph before losing the title to Magnum XL-200 at Cedar Point about a year later. Its terrain-following layout means the drop from the ride’s highest to lowest point is greater than its official 167.3-foot height statistic suggests.

Beyond Bandit, the park mixes family and kids’ rides such as DinoRunner, Space Factory, and the Wan Wan Coaster Wandit with seasonal draws like the Pool WAI water park in summer. In February 2026, Yomiuriland also became home to PokéPark Kanto, a Pokémon-themed area added within the park grounds.

History and Legacy

Yomiuriland has operated continuously since 1964, making it one of the longer-running amusement parks in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Several past coasters, including SL Coaster, White Canyon, Twist Coaster Robin, and the Momonga Standing and Loop Coaster, have since closed and been removed as the park refreshed its ride lineup over the decades.

The on-site Yomiuri Giants Stadium has anchored the park’s sports heritage since 1985, hosting the baseball team’s practices and Eastern League farm games for decades. The team’s farm squad shifted to the newly built Giants Town Stadium in Inagi in March 2025, while Yomiuri Giants Stadium has continued to be used for third-team, women’s team, and junior youth training and games.

Liseberg is a seasonal amusement park in Gothenburg, Sweden, that opened its gates on 8 May 1923. Owned by the city of Gothenburg and run by Liseberg AB, the 17-hectare park has grown from a modest garden exhibition site into one of the largest and most visited amusement parks in Scandinavia, spanning summer, Halloween, and Christmas seasons each year.

The park draws roughly 3.1 million visitors annually, making it the second most-visited theme park in Scandinavia. Its reputation rests heavily on a lineup of internationally recognized roller coasters, including the wooden coaster Balder, the launched multi-inversion Helix, and the B&M dive coaster Valkyria, which have earned Liseberg regular mentions among the world’s best amusement parks.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Gothenburg, Sweden

Operator: Liseberg AB (owned by City of Gothenburg)

Opened: May 8, 1923

Size: About 17 hectares (42 acres)

Annual Visitors: About 3.1 million

Signature Attraction: Helix (Mack Rides launched coaster, opened 2014)

The Ride Experience

Liseberg’s coaster collection spans nearly four decades of ride engineering. Lisebergbanan, opened in 1987, was an early staple, while Balder, an Intamin wooden coaster opened in 2003, was twice voted the world’s best wooden coaster in 2003 and 2005. Helix, a Mack Rides steel coaster opened in 2014, uses two linear synchronous motor launches to send riders through seven inversions at speeds up to 100 km/h across roughly 1,381 meters of track. Valkyria, a Bolliger & Mabillard dive coaster that opened in 2018, stands 47 meters tall with a 50-meter first drop, three inversions, and speeds near 105 km/h, making it Europe’s longest and tallest dive coaster.

Beyond coasters, Liseberg blends classic amusement park charm with seasonal theming, transforming for Halloween and again for its long-running Christmas market, which together draw hundreds of thousands of additional visitors outside the core summer season.

History and Recognition

Liseberg opened in 1923 as part of Gothenburg’s tercentenary jubilee exhibition and was retained afterward as a permanent amusement park. Over the following century it expanded steadily, adding major steel and wooden coasters that helped it earn spots on international best-park rankings, including a Forbes top-ten amusement parks mention in 2005. In February 2024, a fire during construction of the planned Oceana waterpark caused a fatality and multiple injuries, a somber chapter in the park’s long history that has not altered its standing as one of Sweden’s most popular attractions.

Kentucky Kingdom is a 67-acre amusement and water park in Louisville, Kentucky, sitting at the intersection of Interstate 65 and Interstate 264 on the Kentucky Exposition Center grounds. The park first opened on May 23, 1987, and has had one of the most turbulent histories in the American amusement industry, surviving an early bankruptcy, a stint under Six Flags, and a multi-year closure before Louisville businessman Ed Hart and his investor group reopened it independently on May 24, 2014.

Today the park is majority-owned and operated by Herschend Family Entertainment, which became Kentucky Kingdom’s majority partner and operator in February 2021. Its lineup mixes steel thrill rides with the Hurricane Bay water park, included with regular admission, making Kentucky Kingdom one of the few Louisville attractions that pairs coasters and water slides on a single ticket.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Louisville, Kentucky

Operator: Herschend Family Entertainment (majority partner and operator since February 2021)

Opened: May 23, 1987 (reopened May 24, 2014 under Ed Hart’s Themeparks LLC)

Size: 67 acres

Annual visitors: Not publicly disclosed (600,000+ visitors in the 2014 reopening season)

Signature attraction: Lightning Run — the world’s only Chance Rides Hyper GT-X coaster

The Ride Experience

Lightning Run, which opened in May 2014, is the park’s headline coaster and the only Hyper GT-X model built by Chance Rides in operation anywhere. It features a 100-foot drop, hits speeds around 55 mph, and runs roughly 2,500 feet of track through a layout of airtime hills.

The park’s second major steel coaster, originally opened in 2016 as Storm Chaser and renamed Wind Chaser in 2025, was built using the surviving steel structure of the former Twisted Twins wooden coaster fitted with Rocky Mountain Construction’s Iron Horse track. It stands about 100 feet tall and includes what was billed as America’s first barrel-roll first drop, along with a 140-degree stall element. Family riders can also try Kentucky Flyer, a wooden coaster that opened in 2019 and reaches about 35 mph over 1,288 feet of track.

A Park Built on Comebacks

Kentucky Kingdom’s history is defined by resilience. The original park filed for bankruptcy after a disappointing debut season, prompting Ed Hart and a group of investors to buy the operating rights in 1989 and reopen the gates in June 1990. Six Flags purchased the park in 1997 and ran it as Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom starting in 1998, but the park shut down in February 2010 amid Six Flags’ corporate bankruptcy.

Hart led another revival, signing a lease with the Kentucky State Fair Board and reopening the park independently on May 24, 2014 through his company Themeparks LLC, with new rides including Lightning Run. Herschend Family Entertainment, the company behind Dollywood and Silver Dollar City, became the park’s majority partner and operator in February 2021, and Hurricane Bay remains part of general admission for guests who want to combine coasters with water slides in the same visit.

Xetulul is a theme park in the Retalhuleu Department of southwestern Guatemala, operated by IRTRA, the Institute for the Recreation of Guatemalan Private Industry Workers. It opened on June 29, 2002, and quickly became one of Central America’s most visited attractions, drawing on IRTRA’s long history of running recreational facilities for the country’s workers and their families.

The park is best known for its unusual layout: nine themed plazas recreate architecture from Guatemala and several European countries, giving visitors scaled versions of landmarks like the Trevi Fountain, the Moulin Rouge, and Tikal’s Temple of the Great Jaguar within a single park. Paired with the neighboring Xocomil water park, which opened in 1997, the two IRTRA properties together draw over one million visitors annually and are widely considered the most popular tourist attraction in Guatemala.

The park also houses a double-decker carousel, said to be the only one of its kind in Central America, and the Transcostero, a narrow-gauge train that carries riders around the grounds.

That international, landmark-driven layout is part of what sets Xetulul apart from typical regional parks and helped it grow into the third-largest amusement park in Latin America, trailing only Beto Carrero World in Brazil and Six Flags México.

Thrill Rides at Xetulul

The park’s headline ride is Avalancha, an Intamin steel coaster with eight inversions, including a loop, a cobra roll, a double corkscrew, and a triple heartline roll, reaching speeds of about 54.7 mph. It is one of a small number of coasters worldwide with eight or more inversions and was Latin America’s largest coaster when it opened. Xetulul also offers smaller family coasters, giving the park a ride lineup that spans from mild to genuinely intense within the same grounds.
