The Art of the Twisted Element

Modern roller coasters have evolved far beyond simple loops and drops. Today’s rides feature twisted elements that combine multiple forces into single, complex maneuvers. These twisted swoops, rolls, and inversions are the result of sophisticated computer-aided design that allows engineers to sculpt every foot of track for maximum sensation.

A twisted element can refer to many things: a zero-G roll that rotates riders upside down while maintaining a sensation of weightlessness, an off-axis turn that tilts riders into unexpected angles, or a wave turn that combines lateral movement with airtime. Each creates a unique blend of forces that keeps riders guessing and screaming.

Masters of the Twist

Rocky Mountain Construction has become synonymous with twisted elements. Their signature moves include the zero-G stall (an extended inverted hang that feels like floating upside down), the wave turn (a half-inversion that delivers lateral airtime), and countless off-axis hills that defy traditional coaster geometry. Rides like Steel Vengeance pack more twisted elements into a single layout than most parks have across their entire coaster lineup.

B&M’s dive loops and Immelmann inversions offer a different style of twist, smooth, graceful, and powerful. Their pretzel loops on flying coasters are among the most intense inversions in the industry, pulling riders through a massive positive-G inversion while face-down in the prone position.

Why Twisted Elements Thrill

The human vestibular system (your inner ear’s balance mechanism) is what makes twisted elements so thrilling. When your body rotates through unexpected axes, your brain struggles to process the orientation changes, creating a thrilling sense of disorientation. Combined with the G-forces of speed and direction changes, twisted elements deliver a sensory overload that straight track simply cannot match.

This is why enthusiasts often cite twisted elements as their favorite part of a ride. The big drops get the attention, but it is the creative inversions and twists that give a coaster its personality.

The Thrill of Going Upside Down

Inversions are one of the most iconic elements of the roller coaster experience. The sensation of being flipped upside down at high speed, held in by nothing but a restraint system and the physics of centripetal force, is a uniquely thrilling experience that has captivated riders since the first modern loops were introduced in the 1970s.

The vertical loop is the most recognizable inversion, but modern coasters feature dozens of inversion types. Corkscrews twist riders through a spiral rotation. Zero-G rolls rotate the train while maintaining a sensation of weightlessness. Cobra rolls combine two half-inversions into a single snaking element. Each delivers a different blend of forces and sensations.

The History of Loops

The first successful modern looping coaster was the Corkscrew at Knott’s Berry Farm, which opened in 1975 with two corkscrew inversions. It was a sensation, proving that riders could be safely inverted at speed. Arrow Dynamics followed with increasingly elaborate designs, and soon parks were competing to build coasters with the most inversions. Today, Cedar Point alone features dozens of inversions across its coaster lineup.

The world record for most inversions on a single coaster currently stands at 14, held by The Smiler at Alton Towers in the UK. While record-chasing inversion counts can sometimes sacrifice ride quality for novelty, the best multi-inversion coasters, like Banshee at Kings Island or Montu at Busch Gardens Tampa, use inversions as natural extensions of the ride’s flow rather than gimmicks.

Why Loops Feel So Good

Inversions work because of the interplay between positive and negative G-forces. At the top of a well-designed loop, riders experience near-weightlessness, while the entry and exit of the loop press them firmly into their seats. This rapid alternation between floating and being pressed creates a rhythmic thrill that is deeply satisfying.

Modern B&M inverted coasters are considered the gold standard for inversions. Their smooth, whippy transitions between elements and the sensation of dangling below the track with your feet hanging free create an unmatched feeling of exposure and freedom.
