Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California holds the world record for most roller coasters at a single park, currently operating 19 distinct coasters across its mountainside acreage. The park’s Coaster Capital of the World branding is genuinely earned — no other operator has matched the density and variety. But not all 19 deserve equal time on a one-day visit. These rankings come from the perspective of veteran coaster enthusiasts trying to maximize the experience, separating the must-rides from the skippables when wait times stretch.

X2: The 4D Free-Fly That Defined a Category

Photo by Dam Design Lab on Unsplash

X2 stands as the world’s first 4D free-fly coaster, with seats that rotate 360 degrees independently of the track direction. The disorienting experience combines a 215-foot first drop with rotating seats that can leave you facing skyward during the descent. Fire effects and a soundtrack add to the sensory overload.

According to Roller Coaster Database, X2 reaches 76 mph and remains the only Arrow Dynamics 4D coaster operating in the United States after the closure of similar models elsewhere.

Twisted Colossus

Originally opened as Colossus in 1978 (a wooden dueling racer), Twisted Colossus reopened in 2015 as a Rocky Mountain Construction hybrid with steel rails on the original wooden structure. The 4,990-foot dueling layout includes both inversions and intense airtime moments, with two trains racing through synchronized maneuvers.

For more on RMC’s hybrid conversions and other coaster categories, our breakdown of every type of roller coaster explained covers how these wood-to-steel rebuilds have transformed aging woodies into world-class rides.

Tatsu

Tatsu is the world’s tallest, longest, and fastest flying coaster at 170 feet, 3,602 feet long, and 62 mph. The pretzel loop element produces some of the highest sustained positive G-forces in the industry. Riders are positioned face-down beneath the track for the entire experience, creating a flight sensation no other configuration matches.

Goliath

Photo by Rohi Bernard Codillo on Unsplash

Goliath, opened in 2000, was once among the tallest hypercoasters in the world at 235 feet. The 85-mph first drop delivers a brief moment of weightlessness, and the helix at the ride’s midpoint produces sustained 4.5 G’s that have made some riders gray out. The orange track is visible from miles around.

Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

Technically a drop tower rather than a coaster, Lex Luthor is built into the existing Superman: Escape from Krypton structure and stands 415 feet — making it the world’s tallest drop tower. The 5-second freefall reaches 85 mph before magnetic brakes engage.

Twisted Colossus’s Sister Rides

The park’s Justice League: Battle for Metropolis indoor dark ride and the classic Revolution coaster (the world’s first modern looping coaster from 1976) deserve attention even if they don’t crack the top tier. Revolution’s recent retracking restored the smooth ride experience that aging had degraded over decades.

Coverage from Theme Park Insider regularly notes that Magic Mountain’s coaster density makes it the single best one-park destination in North America for serious coaster enthusiasts.

How to Tackle Magic Mountain’s Lineup

Plan a strategic route up the mountain rather than crisscrossing the park. Start at X2 in the back, work through Tatsu and Goliath, then sweep the front section on the return trip. Flash Pass is expensive but often worthwhile on summer weekends when standby waits routinely exceed two hours on every major coaster.

For more strategic park-day planning across multiple destinations, our guide to traveling theme parks on a budget compares Flash Pass economics across regional and destination parks. Magic Mountain rewards visitors who commit to its scale and accept that even one full day cannot cover everything.

The park operates year-round and drew 3.317 million visitors in 2024.

Long marketed as the ‘Thrill Capital of the World,’ Six Flags Magic Mountain became the first amusement park in history to operate 20 simultaneous roller coasters when Wonder Woman: Flight of Courage debuted in July 2022. As of 2025 the park runs about 18 coasters following the permanent closure of Superman: Escape from Krypton in September 2024, yet still holds multiple world records and ranks among the top thrill destinations in North America.

Stats at a Glance

Opened: May 29, 1971

Location: Valencia, California

Acreage: 209 acres

Operating Coasters (2025): About 18

2024 Attendance: 3.317 million

Owner: Six Flags (since 1979)

World Record: First park to operate 20 coasters simultaneously (2022)

A Legacy of World Firsts

Six Flags Magic Mountain has led coaster innovation for five decades. In 1976, Revolution (then called The Great American Revolution) became the first modern 360-degree looping steel coaster in the world. In March 1997, Superman: Escape from Krypton opened as the world’s tallest roller coaster at 415 feet — its top speed of 100 mph tied Tower of Terror at Dreamworld, Australia, which had opened two months earlier in January 1997 as the first coaster ever to break the 100 mph barrier. In 2002, X2 — designed by Arrow Dynamics — debuted as the world’s first fourth-dimension coaster, with independently rotating seats mounted on the ends of each axle. The park’s record-setting streak continued in July 2022 when Wonder Woman: Flight of Courage, built by Rocky Mountain Construction, opened as the world’s tallest and longest single-rail roller coaster at 131 feet and more than 3,300 feet of track.

Signature Rides Worth the Trip

X2 remains one of the most singular coasters anywhere: standing 174 feet tall, reaching 76 mph, and threading 3,609 feet of track while riders spin freely in rotating cars — an experience no other park replicated for years. Twisted Colossus, opened in 2015 and rebuilt by Rocky Mountain Construction on the skeleton of the original wooden Colossus, stretches nearly 5,000 feet and is a Möbius-loop design — both tracks must be completed before riders return to the station — making it the world’s longest racing coaster. Tatsu, a Bolliger and Mabillard flying coaster that launched in 2006, puts riders face-down in a prone position through an elevation change of around 263 feet, ranking among the tallest flying coasters ever constructed.

Tormenta Rampaging Run Sets Six World Records at Six Flags Over Texas — Opening June 26

The countdown is officially on at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, where Tormenta Rampaging Run opens June 26. This B&M giga dive coaster stands 309 feet tall, reaches 87 mph, and stretches 4,199 feet of track — simultaneously claiming the titles of world’s tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster, plus three additional records, for six total. Themed to the Spanish tradition of the running of the bulls, Tormenta earns a brand-new classification: the first-ever “giga dive coaster,” combining a giga’s massive scale with the iconic beyond-vertical drop of a dive machine. It is arguably the most significant new coaster opening of 2026.

Disney’s rethemed indoor launch coaster at Hollywood Studios — now starring Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem — opened Memorial Day weekend and has earned enthusiastic guest reviews well into June. Walt Disney Imagineering overhauled the entire experience with new ride vehicles, a fully redesigned pre-show, and a fresh Hollywood concert soundtrack featuring Electric Mayhem covers with guest artists. If you’re building a Walt Disney World trip around it, our complete Magic Kingdom height requirements guide covers every Walt Disney World ride-access tier so you can plan without surprises.

Alabama Adventure’s Rampage Wooden Coaster Reopens After Extended Closure

Fans of the Southeast’s classic woodens got big news when Alabama Adventure & Splash Adventure welcomed back Rampage with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 19. The beloved wooden coaster, which originally debuted in 1998, had been sidelined for an extended period, making its return one of the most anticipated regional park moments of the summer. Park officials also teased a second major fan-favorite announcement tied to the same event — keeping anticipation high for what comes next at this underrated Alabama gem.

Fun-Plex Omaha Launches Mammoth, Nebraska’s Tallest Roller Coaster

Summer arrived large at Fun-Plex in Omaha, Nebraska, with the debut of Mammoth, the state’s newest and largest coaster at 70 feet tall. The park also unveiled a redesigned dry-side experience including the Fun-Plex Speedway go-kart attraction, plus a recurring Friday Night Rides event series that kicked off June 19. For a regional family park, this is a meaningful leap that puts Fun-Plex squarely on the Midwest coaster map.

Carowinds Announces World-Record “Rip Roarin’ Falls” Log Flume for 2027

Carowinds made a massive 2027 announcement this week: Rip Roarin’ Falls, a WhiteWater-built super flume that will claim three world records simultaneously — tallest flume drop (100 feet), tallest reverse drop (42 feet), and tallest reverse camelback (32 feet). The 6.5-minute ride covers 2,240 feet of track and tops out at 50 mph, replacing the former Raging Rapids site that closed in 2019. A 35-inch height requirement keeps it accessible for families of all sizes, positioning Rip Roarin’ Falls to be a signature multi-generational draw for years to come.

Holiday World Teases “Project Flip Flop” — Largest Investment in Park History

Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari in Santa Claus, Indiana, sent the enthusiast community into a frenzy by announcing “Project Flip Flop,” a mystery 2027 attraction billed as the single largest investment in the park’s history. Located in “Boulder Canyon” on the site of the former Raging Rapids (closed 2023), the project has its own dedicated website and social channels — but zero details on ride type, height, or manufacturer. Speculation is running wide open across coaster forums, with water coasters and launched wooden rides among the top guesses.

Disney Springs Restricts Bus and Watercraft Access Starting June 28

Walt Disney World announced one of its largest Disney Springs policy changes in recent memory: starting June 28, guests boarding Disney Resort buses or the Sassagoula River Cruise at Disney Springs must provide proof of a confirmed resort stay or qualifying dining reservation at their destination hotel. The move ends the longtime casual use of Disney’s free transportation network by day-trippers and non-resort guests visiting the shopping district.

A Florida state filing this week disclosed that Disney’s upcoming Lakeshore Lodge along Bay Lake at Walt Disney World will be structured entirely as a Disney Vacation Club timeshare property — comprising 876 vacation homes across 967 units. Non-Members will still be able to book cash night stays, consistent with other DVC resorts, but the filing also confirmed strict resale restrictions. The resort targets a summer 2027 opening and will join a Bay Lake waterfront that already includes Bay Lake Tower and The Grand Floridian Villas.

Six Flags Expands Flexible Membership to Six Additional Parks

Six Flags Entertainment Corporation rolled out its subscription-style Membership program to six more parks starting June 8: Carowinds, Dorney Park, Kings Dominion, Kings Island, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Schlitterbahn New Braunfels now all offer multi-park cluster access for a monthly fee. The expansion brings more former Cedar Fair parks under the unified Six Flags guest-loyalty umbrella — a key step in merging the two companies’ pass structures after their 2024 combination. If Kings Island is on your list, our Kings Island height requirements guide has every ride tier mapped out for easy trip planning.

Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, launched its 50th Anniversary Celebration on June 20, with festivities running through August 9. Highlights include a custom drone show, a nightly “50 Years of Thrills” parade, a “Memories in Motion” stage show, and decade-themed entertainment tracing the park’s origins back to its 1976 opening. A Firehouse Ice Cream Parlor pop-up serving nostalgic flavors from the park’s inaugural year adds a sweet finishing touch to the milestone season.

Guests will walk through the Wheeler House, Hawkins National Laboratory, and the Upside Down while confronting Demogorgons and Vecna. It marks the franchise’s fourth appearance at HHN, following runs in 2018, 2019, and 2023.

Live Latin music, dance performances, themed cuisine, and festive décor fill the park on event weekends. The launch follows earlier 2026 seasonal programming like the Splash! Water Parade, signaling an expanded and more diverse entertainment calendar for Dorney under Six Flags management.

Cedar Point Shores is the water park at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio — an 18-acre complex of speed slides, a giant wave pool, two lazy rivers, and family splash zones perched directly on the shore of Lake Erie. Operated by Six Flags, it consistently ranks among the top water parks in Ohio and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer to its striking lakeside setting.

The park traces its roots to 1988, when it opened as Soak City with ten slides before growing steadily through the 1990s. A full rebrand and overhaul in 2017 gave it the Cedar Point Shores identity, introducing new themed areas and attractions. Following Six Flags’ 2024 merger with Cedar Fair, the park has continued expanding and now offers more than 28 water attractions alongside the iconic Breakwater Bay wave pool.

Quick Answer

Cedar Point Shores is the official water park at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. The 18-acre park features more than 18 slides and water attractions — including the Breakwater Bay wave pool, Point Plummet speed slides, two lazy rivers, and dedicated children’s areas — and is open seasonally from late May through late August. Admission is sold separately from Cedar Point amusement park tickets, starting at $50 per person online for the 2026 season.

Cedar Point Shores Rides and Attractions

Cedar Point Shores packs more than 28 attractions across 18 acres. The headline thrill ride is Point Plummet, a six-story tower with four enclosed 400-foot speed slides, each featuring an aqua-drop pod that drops the floor out beneath you for a near-vertical free fall. Riptide Raceway channels a different kind of competition — six side-by-side mat racing lanes let riders go head-to-head from top to bottom. Lake Erie Nor’easter delivers an enclosed multi-slide experience, while Perch Plunge offers three classic serpentine body slides and Wild Walleye features individual tube slides for solo riders. Portside Plunge and Starboard Surge, both part of the park since its 2017 rebrand, are single- and double-rider tube slides that finish with a dramatic drop into a splash pool.

For mixed groups and families, Storm Surge is a 76-foot family raft ride sending multi-person tubes twisting down to a splashdown. Cedar Creek is the park’s relaxing lazy river for drifting at an easy pace, while Runaway Rapids is a wilder action river winding through simulated canyons with waterfalls and geysers along the route. Great Lakes Cove offers open swimming with floating obstacles, and The Sandlot provides a beach volleyball area and lounging space with open-air seating. New for the 2025 season, two additional tube slides were added inside the former Crosscurrent tower, rounding out an already deep lineup.

Breakwater Bay: Cedar Point’s Giant Wave Pool

Breakwater Bay is the centerpiece of Cedar Point Shores and one of the largest wave pools in Ohio. The pool holds approximately 500,000 gallons of water at a maximum depth of six feet, generating rolling waves that reach three to four feet — large enough to body surf or ride inner tubes through the surf. Inner tubes are permitted in the wave pool, making it accessible for swimmers at all comfort levels, from confident open-water swimmers to guests who prefer a more buoyant experience.

The pool draws large crowds throughout the day, so arriving early or heading to Breakwater Bay during the midday lunch window — when most guests are eating and lines for slides are shorter — gives you the best chance at open water and a lounge chair. The surrounding deck looks directly out toward Lake Erie, giving Breakwater Bay one of the more scenic backdrops of any wave pool in the Midwest.

Family Zones and Kids Areas

Cedar Point Shores dedicates significant space to younger guests across three distinct children’s areas. Lemmy’s Lagoon is the park’s signature kids zone, themed around Lemmy — Lake Erie’s legendary sea-monster mascot — and features shallow-water play areas, kid-scaled slides, and interactive spray features designed for toddlers and early elementary-age children. Lakeside Landing is a multi-level play structure offering 12 smaller slides, geysers, and fountains for slightly older kids. The Waterin’ Hole rounds out the trio with additional interactive splash features and shallow wading areas.

Height requirements vary by attraction, so families with young children should review the requirements on the official Six Flags Cedar Point website before queuing for specific slides. Complimentary Coast Guard-certified life jackets are available free of charge throughout the park.

Tickets, Hours, and Planning Your Visit

Cedar Point Shores runs seasonally from late May through late August, with the 2026 season open May 23 through August 31. Peak-season hours are generally 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., though daily hours can vary — the Six Flags Cedar Point website posts the full calendar and is the most reliable source before your visit.

Single-day water park admission starts at $50 per person when purchased online for the 2026 season. A Slide and Refresh Summer Ticket, also $50, includes all-day Coca-Cola fountain refills plus a bottled Dasani water. Season passholders can purchase Bring-A-Friend tickets for $35 each. Cedar Point Shores admission does not include access to Cedar Point amusement park, and a Cedar Point day ticket does not cover the water park. Six Flags season passes and combo options that include both parks are available and offer strong value for multi-day resort visits. Standard parking is $30 and applies whether you are visiting Cedar Point, Cedar Point Shores, or both.

Private poolside cabanas are available for reservation starting at $139 for a standard cabana — passholders pay less — with deluxe and premium options available at higher price points, including units with a TV, mini-fridge, and ceiling fan. All cabanas include WiFi and lockable storage. Outside food and beverages are not permitted inside the park; sealed water bottles and items for special dietary needs are exceptions. Lockers are available near the main gate, Breakwater Bay, and at other locations throughout the park. The park operates on cashless payments only — card or mobile wallet required.

Location, Setting, and Getting There

Cedar Point Shores sits along Cedar Point’s mile-long beach on the Lake Erie shoreline in Sandusky, Ohio, roughly 60 miles west of Cleveland and about 100 miles south of Detroit. The combination of a working wave pool and an actual Great Lake visible in the background makes it one of the most scenically positioned water parks in the Midwest, with lake views accessible from nearly every vantage point inside the park.

The historic Hotel Breakers — a Cedar Point resort property dating to 1905 — is steps from the water park entrance and makes Cedar Point Shores a natural anchor for a multi-day resort stay. Sandusky offers a wide range of hotels, vacation rentals, and camping options for guests not staying on the Cedar Point campus. The water park uses a separate parking lot behind Cedar Point near Hotel Breakers.

Dining at Cedar Point Shores

The park operates seven dining venues, covering everything from casual poolside bites to bar service. Dockside Grill serves burgers and fresh-cut fries, Crystal Rock Café and Beaches and Cream handle snacks and sweets, Lemmy’s Walking Tacos is a staff favorite for a quick meal on the go, and Mufflehead’s Beach Bar and Schooner’s Bayside Bar offer beverages for adults. A Dippin’ Dots stand rounds out the options. All Cedar Point Shores restaurants accept Cedar Point Dining Plans, making the dining plan a worthwhile add-on for guests planning to eat multiple meals at the park.

Cedar Point Shores water park FAQs

Is Cedar Point Shores the water park at Cedar Point?

Yes. Cedar Point Shores is the official water park at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. It is located on the same resort property as the Cedar Point amusement park but operates as a completely separate attraction with its own admission ticket.

Is Cedar Point Shores included with a Cedar Point amusement park ticket?

No. A standard Cedar Point amusement park ticket does not include access to Cedar Point Shores, and a Cedar Point Shores water park ticket does not include entry to Cedar Point’s roller coasters. Six Flags season passes and combo tickets covering both parks are available for guests who want to visit both.

How much does Cedar Point Shores cost in 2026?

Single-day admission to Cedar Point Shores starts at $50 per person when purchased online for the 2026 season. Season passholders can buy Bring-A-Friend tickets for $35 each. Parking is $30 and is shared with Cedar Point amusement park. Cabana rentals start at $139.

What is Breakwater Bay at Cedar Point Shores?

Breakwater Bay is the large wave pool at Cedar Point Shores. It holds approximately 500,000 gallons of water at up to six feet deep and generates waves reaching three to four feet. Inner tubes are permitted, and it serves as the park’s centerpiece attraction.

When does Cedar Point Shores open and close for the season?

Cedar Point Shores typically opens on Memorial Day weekend in late May and closes in late August or early September. For 2026, the park is open May 23 through August 31. Hours are generally 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. during peak season — check the Six Flags Cedar Point website for the full calendar before visiting.

What are the best thrill rides at Cedar Point Shores?

Point Plummet — a six-story free-fall speed slide tower with aqua-drop pods — is the top thrill ride at the park. Riptide Raceway (six-lane mat racer), Lake Erie Nor’easter (enclosed multi-slide complex), Storm Surge (76-foot family raft ride), and Runaway Rapids (action river with waterfalls and geysers) are also consistently popular with thrill-seeking visitors.

Can you see Lake Erie from Cedar Point Shores?

Yes. Cedar Point Shores is positioned directly on the Lake Erie shoreline, and views of the lake are visible from throughout the park — including from the Breakwater Bay wave pool deck. The lakeside setting is one of the most distinctive features of the park’s location.

Kings Island is a 364-acre amusement park in Mason, Ohio, situated about 24 miles northeast of Cincinnati. Taft Broadcasting opened the park on April 29, 1972, in part to replace Coney Island, a beloved Cincinnati resort that repeatedly flooded along the Ohio River. From its first season, Kings Island earned attention as a serious roller coaster destination, and The Racer—a twin wooden coaster that debuted with the park—is widely credited with reigniting worldwide interest in wooden coasters during the 1970s.

Over five decades, the park grew into one of the most coaster-dense destinations in North America, spanning 364 acres with 15 roller coasters, a 33-acre water park, and nine themed areas. Today Kings Island is owned by Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, following a merger completed on July 1, 2024, and draws around 3.5 million visitors per year.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Mason, Ohio (24 miles NE of Cincinnati)

Opened: April 29, 1972

Acreage: 364 acres

Roller Coasters: 15

Signature Coaster: The Beast — 7,361 ft, world’s longest wooden roller coaster

Tallest / Fastest Coaster: Orion — 287 ft tall, 91 mph (B&M giga coaster, opened 2020)

Water Park: Soak City — 33 acres

2023 Attendance: 3.488 million

The Coaster Collection

Kings Island’s coaster lineup is its calling card. The Beast, which opened in 1979 and was designed and built entirely in-house by park staff, remains the longest wooden roller coaster in the world at 7,361 feet, threading through 35 acres of forested terrain at up to 64.78 mph. Designated an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark in 2004, it has carried more than 54 million riders and received a refurbishment in 2022 that steepened its first drop from 45 to 53 degrees.

The steel roster is equally impressive. Orion, a Bolliger & Mabillard giga coaster that opened in July 2020, stands 287 feet tall with a 300-foot drop and reaches 91 mph—ranking among the fastest rides in North America and representing the largest single investment in park history at $31 million. Banshee (2014) holds the record for the world’s longest inverted roller coaster, and Diamondback (2009) is a hypercoaster topping out around 80 mph, giving Kings Island four headline coasters that each hold or have held a world record.

Beyond the Coasters

Soak City, a 33-acre water park that opened in 1989, adds a full warm-weather counterpoint to the thrill rides, featuring wave pools, a variety of water slides, and Tropical Plunge—a seven-story water slide complex added in 2016. Nine themed land areas across the main park offer experiences ranging from toddler-friendly zones to high-intensity thrill sections, making the park a genuine all-day destination for groups of mixed ages.

Kings Island’s seasonal events stretch the calendar well beyond summer. Halloween Haunt runs on weekends from September through October with haunted houses, mazes, live shows, and scare zones woven through the regular attractions. WinterFest transforms the park from mid-November through late December with more than five million color-changing lights, holiday entertainment, and ice skating on the Royal Fountain—cementing Kings Island as a year-round draw for the Greater Cincinnati region.

Kings Island FAQs

What is the tallest roller coaster at Kings Island?

Orion is the tallest and fastest coaster at Kings Island. The Bolliger & Mabillard giga coaster stands 287 feet tall, drops 300 feet, and reaches a top speed of 91 mph. It opened on July 2, 2020, as the seventh giga coaster in the world.

What makes The Beast at Kings Island famous?

The Beast has held the record for the world’s longest wooden roller coaster since it opened in 1979. At 7,361 feet long and racing through 35 wooded acres at nearly 65 mph, it was designed and built in-house by Kings Island staff and is an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark.

Who owns Kings Island?

Kings Island is owned by Six Flags Entertainment Corporation. The park was founded by Taft Broadcasting in 1972 and passed through several owners before Cedar Fair acquired it in 2006. On July 1, 2024, Cedar Fair and Six Flags completed a merger of equals, bringing Kings Island under the Six Flags banner.

Wrath of Rakshasa opened on May 31, 2025, at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, instantly claiming two world records for dive coasters: the steepest drop angle at 96 degrees beyond vertical and the most inversions at five. Built by Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard, the steel dive coaster stands 180 feet tall and sends riders plunging 171 feet at 67 mph.

The ride occupied the park’s County Fair section, replacing the Buccaneer Battle attraction, and drew its theme from Hindu mythology. A fictional traveling exhibition presented guests with carnival-style queue theming and artifact displays tied to the Rakshasa — a shape-shifting demon — all beneath a striking blue-track, gold-support color scheme visible across the Great America skyline.

Stats at a Glance

Park: Six Flags Great America, Gurnee, IL

Manufacturer: Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M)

Opened: May 31, 2025

Height: 180 ft (55 m)

Drop: 171 ft (52 m) at 96°

Top Speed: 67 mph (108 km/h)

Length: 3,239 ft (987 m)

Inversions: 5

The Ride Experience

After ascending the chain lift to 180 feet, riders hang suspended over the beyond-vertical drop before plunging 171 feet at 96 degrees — one full degree past vertical — and accelerating to 67 mph. The sequence of five inversions includes an Immelmann loop, a dive loop, a zero-G roll variant, a corkscrew, and a barrel roll, separated by sweeping turns and a 360-degree helix before the final brake run.

Each of the three trains seats 21 riders seven-across in a single floorless row, equipped with B&M vest restraints. With all three trains running simultaneously, the coaster maintained competitive throughput for a ride of its intensity. Total ride duration came in at approximately two minutes.

Records and Recognition

When it debuted in May 2025, Wrath of Rakshasa surpassed both Yukon Striker at Canada’s Wonderland and Dr. Diabolical’s Cliffhanger at Six Flags Fiesta Texas to claim the title of most-inverted dive coaster in the world. Its 96-degree drop angle simultaneously set a new record for the steepest dive coaster descent ever constructed.

Recognition followed quickly: the ride placed fifth in Amusement Today’s 2025 Golden Ticket Awards for Best New Theme Concept, and USA Today’s 2026 Readers’ Choice poll ranked it fifth among the best new theme park attractions in the country — a strong debut for a coaster in only its first full operating season.

Tatsu is a steel flying roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, designed by Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard and opened on May 13, 2006. Its name is Japanese for ‘Flying Beast,’ an apt label for a ride that debuted as the tallest, fastest, and longest flying coaster in the world.

Riders board in a standing position before being tilted face-down into a prone flying harness, then launched through 3,602 feet of track at up to 62 mph. The layout includes four inversions and is anchored by the world’s tallest pretzel loop — a 124-foot element that hauls riders from face-down to face-up and back with intense g-forces, all just feet above the hillside terrain.

Photo: Jeremy Thompson from United States of America / CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Stats at a Glance

Park: Six Flags Magic Mountain

Location: Valencia, California

Manufacturer: Bolliger & Mabillard

Opened: May 13, 2006

Height: 170 ft (52 m)

Top Speed: 62 mph (100 km/h)

Length: 3,602 ft (1,098 m)

Inversions: 4

The Ride Experience

From the moment riders are tilted horizontal, Tatsu delivers a sensation closer to hang-gliding than a traditional roller coaster. The train crests a 103-foot chain lift before plunging 111 feet into a terrain-hugging layout that keeps guests staring at the ground below. Key elements include a corkscrew, a zero-gravity roll — the first ever on a flying coaster model — a horseshoe turn, and the headline 124-foot pretzel loop. That loop is the defining moment: riders plunge face-first toward the earth, are swept onto their backs under strong positive g-forces, then are flung back face-down in one continuous fluid arc.

Because the flying position keeps riders horizontal throughout, every banked turn and dip reads as a near-miss with the landscape. The combination of speed (62 mph), proximity to the terrain, and the disorienting prone posture makes Tatsu feel faster and more exposed than its statistics alone suggest.

Records and Legacy

When Tatsu opened in 2006 it simultaneously held three world records: tallest, fastest, and longest flying coaster. It also introduced the zero-gravity roll inversion to the flying-coaster format, a first for the model type. More than two decades on, it still ranks among the most celebrated flying coasters in North America, having appeared in Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Awards.

Tatsu became Six Flags Magic Mountain’s seventeenth coaster and cost approximately $21 million to construct. Its record-setting specs raised the bar for the entire flying-coaster genre, and the park’s willingness to invest in terrain-interactive layout design gave Tatsu a character that straightforward out-and-back flying coasters struggle to match.

When did Tatsu open?

Tatsu opened on May 13, 2006, at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, debuting as the world’s tallest, fastest, and longest flying coaster.

What makes the pretzel loop on Tatsu special?

At 124 feet, Tatsu’s pretzel loop is the tallest in the world. The element sweeps riders from a face-down flying position onto their backs and back again in one continuous motion, generating the highest g-forces of the entire ride.

Batman: The Ride opened on May 9, 1992 at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, and made history as the world’s first inverted roller coaster. Designed by Bolliger & Mabillard, it introduced a new breed of thrill ride — one where riders sit in open-air trains with their feet dangling beneath them, fully exposed to every twist and turn.

The original installation proved so successful that clones followed at five additional Six Flags parks across the United States: Great Adventure, Magic Mountain, St. Louis, Over Georgia, and Over Texas. In 2005, the American Coaster Enthusiasts recognized the ride’s revolutionary impact by awarding the Six Flags Great America installation its prestigious Coaster Landmark designation.

Stats at a Glance

Park: Six Flags Great America (original); clones at 5 other Six Flags parks

Manufacturer: Bolliger & Mabillard

Opened: May 9, 1992

Height: 100 ft (30 m)

Top Speed: 50 mph (80 km/h)

Length: 2,700 ft (820 m)

Inversions: 5 (two vertical loops, one zero-G roll, two corkscrews)

Duration: About 2 minutes

The Ride Experience

From the moment the train crests the 100-foot chain-lift hill, Batman: The Ride delivers relentless intensity. Riders accelerate to 50 mph before diving into the first vertical loop, then thread through a zero-gravity roll and two corkscrews — all with legs hanging free and no floor beneath them. The layout generates sustained forces up to 4 g’s while maintaining the silky smoothness that became a hallmark of Bolliger & Mabillard’s engineering.

The five-inversion sequence runs without pause, giving the ride a breathless, almost balletic quality. That pacing — full commitment from first drop to final brake run — is exactly what made the design so widely copied and why enthusiasts still rank original Batman installations among the finest examples of the inverted coaster format.

Legacy and Influence

Before Batman: The Ride, suspended looping coasters kept trains swinging beneath a track but passengers inside enclosed vehicles. Bolliger & Mabillard’s inverted design locked the vehicles in place and eliminated the gondola entirely, leaving riders exposed to the elements on every maneuver. That seemingly simple shift redefined what a thrill ride could feel like and sparked a wave of inverted coasters from competing manufacturers throughout the 1990s.

The ride’s ACE Coaster Landmark status, granted in 2005, acknowledged that the Great America original didn’t just entertain — it permanently altered roller coaster design. Decades after opening, Batman: The Ride installations continue drawing long queues, a testament to a layout that has never needed updating to remain a park headliner.

The Joker is a steel 4D Free Spin roller coaster located at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. Built by S&S – Sansei Technologies and opened on May 28, 2016, the ride stands 120 feet tall and reaches a top speed of 38 mph along 1,019 feet of track.

What sets The Joker apart from traditional coasters is its magnetic free-spinning seat technology. Riders sit in wing-style vehicles that rotate independently of the track, allowing them to flip unpredictably—sometimes forward, sometimes backward—creating a different experience on every single ride. The coaster was originally announced under the name Total Mayhem before being rebranded in January 2016 to tie in with the DC Comics supervillain.

Stats at a Glance

Park: Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, NJ

Manufacturer: S&S – Sansei Technologies

Model: 4D Free Spin

Opened: May 28, 2016

Height: 120 ft (37 m)

Drop: 54 ft (16 m)

Top Speed: 38 mph (61 km/h)

Length: 1,019 ft (311 m)

Track Inversions: 2 (riders can flip up to 6 times)

Capacity: ~720 riders per hour

The Ride Experience

The Joker places riders in wing-style vehicles arranged four across in two rows, with each car holding eight passengers. The magic lies in the seats’ magnetic rotation system—unlike fixed roller coaster seats, these pivot freely, meaning the precise number of flips any rider experiences depends on weight distribution and momentum rather than a scripted sequence. Riders may flip six times or just a handful, and no two rides feel quite the same.

The layout features two track inversions paired with the unpredictable seat rotations, sending riders head-over-heels in ways they cannot anticipate. That element of chaos is the whole point: The Joker is designed to disorient, to thrill, and to keep even repeat riders guessing.

From Total Mayhem to The Joker

Six Flags Great Adventure announced the coaster in September 2015 under the working title Total Mayhem. By January 2016 the park revealed the DC Comics rebrand, aligning the attraction with the park’s longstanding Justice League and Batman theming. The ride’s queue area and support structure are styled in black, fitting the Joker’s chaotic aesthetic.

The Great Adventure installation is one of four S&S 4D Free Spin coasters operating across the Six Flags chain under The Joker name, with sister rides at Six Flags Great America, Six Flags Over Texas, and Six Flags New England. The shared design makes The Joker a signature experience across the company’s parks.

The Joker FAQs

What type of roller coaster is The Joker at Six Flags Great Adventure?

The Joker is an S&S – Sansei Technologies 4D Free Spin steel roller coaster. Its defining feature is independently rotating wing seats that allow riders to flip unpredictably throughout the ride, independent of the track’s two inversions.

How many times do you flip on The Joker?

Riders can flip up to six times, but the exact number varies every ride because the seats spin freely based on rider weight and momentum—not a fixed program. No two rides are guaranteed to feel identical.

When did The Joker open at Six Flags Great Adventure?

The Joker opened to the public on May 28, 2016, following season pass holder preview days. It was originally announced in September 2015 under the name Total Mayhem before being rebranded in January 2016.

Full Throttle is a steel launched roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, built by Premier Rides and opened on June 22, 2013. Replacing the beloved Log Jammer flume ride, it introduced a new era of thrills to the park with three linear synchronous motor (LSM) launches — two forward and one backward — propelling riders to a top speed of 70 mph along 2,200 feet of track.

The ride’s centerpiece is a towering 160-foot vertical loop that held the record for the world’s tallest vertical loop at the time of its debut, surpassing the previous record held by Superman: Krypton Coaster. What makes Full Throttle truly unique is the ‘top hat’ inversion perched atop the loop itself, making it the only coaster ever to feature track on both the bottom and the top of a vertical loop in the same circuit.

Photo by David Brown on Pexels

Stats at a Glance

Park: Six Flags Magic Mountain, Valencia, California

Manufacturer: Premier Rides

Model: Sky Rocket III

Opened: June 22, 2013

Height: 164 ft (50 m)

Top Speed: 70 mph (110 km/h)

Length: 2,200 ft (670 m)

Inversions: 2

G-Force: 4.0

The Ride Experience

Full Throttle launches riders out of the station along a straightaway, building speed before hurling them into the massive 160-foot vertical loop. After cresting the top-hat element above the loop, the train rockets through a second inversion and then reverses — sending riders backward through a third launch before finally braking to a stop. The entire sequence lasts about 90 seconds, packing in a relentless series of forces and direction changes.

With a G-force rating of 4.0 and a minimum height requirement of 54 inches, Full Throttle is firmly in the ‘thrill-only’ category. Its placement in Six Flags Plaza at the front of the park makes it one of the first coasters guests encounter, and its silhouette — dominated by that enormous loop — serves as a constant visual reminder of what awaits.

Records and Legacy

When Full Throttle opened in 2013, its 160-foot vertical loop immediately claimed the world record for tallest vertical loop, a title it held until 2016 when Flash at Lewa Adventure in Xianyang, China, surpassed it. Despite losing the record, Full Throttle remains a standout example of Premier Rides’ Sky Rocket III design, celebrated for its unusual multi-directional launch sequence and structural ingenuity.

The coaster added yet another record-chasing attraction to Six Flags Magic Mountain, a park already renowned for hosting more roller coasters than any other theme park in the world. Full Throttle’s combination of raw speed, landmark loop height, and backward-launch finale has kept it a fan favorite more than a decade after its debut.
