Europa-Park is a 95-hectare theme park in Rust, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, founded by Franz Mack and his son Roland and opened to its first visitors on July 12, 1975. Built as a showcase for the family’s ride-manufacturing business, Mack Rides, it grew from a modest site with a handful of rides into one of the largest theme park resorts in the world, still owned and run by the Mack family today.

The park is organized into 21 themed areas, most representing different European countries and regions, giving visitors the feel of touring the continent within a single site. With around 100 attractions including 14 roller coasters and a dozen or so water rides, plus themed hotels and the adjoining Rulantica water park, Europa-Park draws millions of visitors annually and has repeatedly been voted one of the best theme parks in the world.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Rust, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Opened: July 12, 1975

Owner: Mack family (Europa-Park GmbH & Co Mack KG)

Size: About 95 hectares

Themed areas: 21 zones, mostly European countries/regions

Attractions: About 100, including 14 roller coasters

Annual visitors: Several million

The Ride Experience

Europa-Park’s coaster lineup draws on several of the world’s top manufacturers rather than a single builder. Silver Star, a Bolliger & Mabillard hypercoaster reaching about 73 meters tall, has anchored the park’s France-themed area since 2002, while Blue Fire Megacoaster, built by the park-owning Mack Rides, launches riders from a standstill to high speed in a matter of seconds. The wooden Wodan Timbur Coaster, built by American manufacturer Great Coasters International and opened in 2012, adds a classic-style ride themed to Norse mythology among the park’s more modern steel structures.

The newest addition, Voltron Nevera powered by Rimac, opened in 2024 in a new Croatian-themed area. According to RCDB, the Mack Rides-built multi-launch coaster uses several separate launches, climbs to a height of over 30 meters, and includes multiple inversions, including a launch into a beyond-vertical top-hat element billed as one of the steepest launches of any coaster in the world.

A Family-Run European Icon

Unlike many major theme parks owned by large corporations, Europa-Park has remained under Mack family ownership since it opened, with Franz Mack’s descendants still directing operations. The park has been recognized for years running as one of the world’s top-rated theme parks by industry awards such as the Golden Ticket Awards, and it was among the first theme parks in Germany to operate year-round.

Beyond rides, the resort includes several themed hotels, from the Roman-inspired Colosseo to the Spanish-styled El Andaluz, plus the Rulantica indoor water park, making Europa-Park as much a multi-day resort destination as a single-day theme park.

Europa-Park FAQs

When did Europa-Park open?

Europa-Park opened on July 12, 1975, founded by Franz Mack and his son Roland as a showcase for their family’s ride-manufacturing business, Mack Rides.

Where is Europa-Park located?

It is located in Rust, in the Baden-Württemberg region of southwestern Germany, near the border with France.

Are all of Europa-Park’s roller coasters built by Mack Rides?

No. While the park is owned by the Mack family and several coasters like Blue Fire Megacoaster and Voltron Nevera are Mack Rides builds, Silver Star was built by Bolliger & Mabillard and the wooden Wodan Timbur Coaster was built by Great Coasters International.

Phantasialand is a theme park in Brühl, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, that opened on April 30, 1967, founded by dollmaker Richard Schmidt and businessman Gottlieb Löffelhardt. What began as a puppet theater with a handful of boat rides has grown into one of Europe’s most densely themed parks, packed onto roughly 28 hectares (69 acres) of land.

The park is organized into distinct themed worlds, including Klugheim, Mystery, Berlin, Mexico, China Town, and the aviation-inspired Rookburgh, each built with elaborate, immersive detail rather than open midways. Phantasialand draws around 2 million visitors annually and has become known for pushing coaster technology forward, most notably with Taron, an Intamin launch coaster whose track weaves through its themed village 58 times, a world record for the design.

Photo: Phantasialand DE / CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Stats at a Glance

Location: Brühl, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Opened: April 30, 1967

Park Area: About 28 hectares (69 acres)

Themed Lands: 6, including Klugheim, Mystery, Berlin, Mexico, China Town, Rookburgh

Annual Visitors: About 2 million

Signature Coaster: Taron (Intamin, opened 2016)

On-Site Hotels: 3 themed hotels: Hotel Charles Lindbergh, Hotel Matamba, Hotel Ling Bao

The Ride Experience

Phantasialand’s headline attraction is Taron, an Intamin multi-launch steel coaster that opened in June 2016 in the Klugheim area. It reaches a top speed of about 117 km/h (73 mph) over roughly 1,320 meters (4,331 feet) of track, with a maximum height of about 30 meters, and was built as the world’s fastest and longest multi-launch coaster at the time of its debut. Other notable rides include Black Mamba, a Bolliger & Mabillard inverted coaster from 2006, and F.L.Y., a Vekoma coaster from 2020 billed as the world’s first launched flying roller coaster.

Unlike parks built around wide-open sightlines, Phantasialand’s rides are woven tightly into themed architecture and landscaping, so coasters like Taron and Raik, a Vekoma family boomerang model, wind through buildings and terrain rather than standing apart from them.

History and Growth

The park has expanded steadily from its 1967 origins into a resort-style destination with three themed on-site hotels: Hotel Ling Bao, Hotel Matamba, and the steampunk-themed Hotel Charles Lindbergh in Rookburgh, which opened in 2020. Its history has not been without setback: a cable fire on May 1, 2001, destroyed two roller coasters, a theater, and parts of the park’s Western-themed area, injuring 54 people, though the park rebuilt and continued expanding its themed lands in the years that followed.

Phantasialand FAQs

Where is Phantasialand located?

Phantasialand is located in Brühl, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, roughly between Cologne and Bonn.

What is Phantasialand’s most famous ride?

Taron, an Intamin multi-launch coaster that opened in 2016, is the park’s signature attraction, known for reaching about 117 km/h and threading through the Klugheim themed area a record 58 times.

How many hotels does Phantasialand have?

Phantasialand operates three themed on-site hotels: Hotel Charles Lindbergh, Hotel Matamba, and Hotel Ling Bao, each offering direct access to the park.

The ride officially debuted July 9-10, 2026, in a new themed area called Rancho de la Tormenta at the Arlington, Texas park.

The coaster reaches 309 feet, hits a top speed of 87 mph, and runs 4,199 feet of track, making it the tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster in the world. Its signature moment — a three-second hold over a 285-foot, 95-degree beyond-vertical drop — headlines a layout that also includes the tallest Immelmann inversion (218 feet) and tallest vertical loop (179 feet) of any coaster anywhere.

What: Tormenta Rampaging Run, world’s first giga dive coaster

Where: Six Flags Over Texas, Arlington, Texas

When: Opened July 9-10, 2026

Height/Speed: 309 ft tall, 87 mph top speed, 4,199 ft track

Records: 6 world records, including tallest/fastest/longest dive coaster

Why it matters: Redefines the dive coaster category and headlines Six Flags’ 2026 season

The Story

Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, Tormenta Rampaging Run is only the second B&M coaster to exceed 300 feet, trailing Carowinds’ Fury 325. It features four inversions, including the record-setting Immelmann and vertical loop, packed into a layout designed around sustained airtime and sharp direction changes.

Six Flags representatives have leaned into the ride’s signature hold over the drop, describing the pause as a moment for riders to look down before the 95-degree plunge. The opening caps a construction and testing process that included technical rehearsals earlier in July, positioning the coaster as the marquee addition to Six Flags’ 2026 lineup across its network of parks.

What It Means for Visitors

For coaster enthusiasts, Tormenta Rampaging Run is an immediate must-ride, holding six simultaneous world records rarely seen in a single new installation. Six Flags Over Texas is likely to see elevated attendance and longer wait times through the rest of the summer as riders travel to Arlington specifically for the credit.

The dive coaster format — known for suspended holds over steep drops — has a devoted following, and this installation sets a new benchmark other parks and manufacturers will be measured against going forward.

Plopsaland De Panne is a family theme park in Adinkerke, part of the coastal municipality of De Panne in West Flanders, Belgium. Owned and operated by Plopsa, a division of Belgian media company Studio 100, the park is built around beloved Flemish children’s characters like Kabouter Plop and Samson en Gert, blending gentle family rides with a growing lineup of serious roller coasters.

The site’s history stretches back further than most people expect. It originally opened in 1935 as Meli Park, a modest attraction built around a honey producer’s business, before Studio 100 acquired and relaunched it as Plopsaland in 2000. Today it ranks as the most-visited theme park in Belgium, pulling in roughly 1.4 million guests annually across 55 attractions.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Adinkerke, De Panne, West Flanders, Belgium

Opened: 1935 (as Meli Park); relaunched as Plopsaland on April 20, 2000

Owner: Plopsa (Studio 100)

Attractions: About 55, including 7 roller coasters

Signature coaster: The Ride to Happiness by Tomorrowland (Mack Rides, 2021)

Annual visitors: About 1.4 million (2022)

Notable fact: Belgium’s most-visited theme park

The Ride Experience

Plopsaland’s biggest draw is The Ride to Happiness by Tomorrowland, a Mack Rides Xtreme Spinning Coaster that opened in July 2021. It reaches about 90 km/h (56 mph), stands roughly 33 meters (108 feet) tall, and runs 920 meters of track with two linear synchronous motor launches and several inversions, including a heartline roll and a double-inverting dive loop, all wrapped in a Tomorrowland dance-festival theme.

Beyond that headline attraction, the park’s coaster lineup includes Anubis The Ride, a Gerstlauer launch coaster themed to ancient Egypt that opened in 2009, and Heidi The Ride, a wooden coaster from Great Coasters International that debuted in 2017. Themed lands such as Mayaland and Wickieland round out the experience for younger visitors and families.

From Honey Farm to Studio 100 Icon

Long before Kabouter Plop appeared anywhere near the site, it operated as Meli Park, opened in 1935 by beekeeper Alberic-Joseph Florizoone as a place to sell his honey alongside simple attractions. The park changed hands and evolved over the decades until Studio 100 took over in 2000, rebranding it Plopsaland after the studio’s first two characters, Plop and Samson.

Since then, Plopsa has steadily reinvested in the park, adding coasters and themed lands roughly every few years while keeping its identity rooted in Flemish children’s television. That strategy has paid off, with the park now consistently ranked as Belgium’s most-visited theme park.

Energylandia is a large amusement park in Zator, Poland, about 50 km west of Kraków. Opened on July 14, 2014, it expanded rapidly through the following decade, absorbing a neighboring water park and adding a string of headline-grabbing steel coasters that turned a modest regional attraction into one of Europe’s biggest draws.

By the early 2020s Energylandia had grown to roughly 70 hectares of themed zones, including Dragon Zone, Extreme Zone, and Fairytale Land, and drew close to two million visitors a year, ranking among Google’s most-searched European tourist attractions in 2021.

Photo: Tom a / CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Zator, Lesser Poland, Poland

Opened: July 14, 2014

Size: About 70 hectares (170 acres)

Roller Coasters: 19

Tallest Ride: Hyperion, 77 m (Intamin)

Notable Attraction: Zadra, RMC hybrid coaster

Annual Visitors: About 1.85 million (2022)

The Ride Lineup

Energylandia’s reputation rests on its concentration of major steel coasters. Hyperion, an Intamin giga coaster that opened in 2018, stands 77 meters tall and reaches roughly 142 km/h, making it the tallest and fastest coaster in Poland. A year later, Rocky Mountain Construction added Zadra, an I-Box hybrid coaster that climbs to about 63 meters with three inversions, tying it for the tallest RMC steel coaster in the world.

Beyond these two flagships, the park groups its attractions into themed zones, including a family-oriented Fairytale Land, the thrill-focused Extreme Zone, and Aqualantis, a water park incorporated into the site since 2016. The count of 19 roller coasters places Energylandia among the parks with the most coasters anywhere in the world.

Growth Into a European Destination

Energylandia grew from a local park into a continental attraction within less than a decade, driven by owner Marek Goczał’s continued investment in record-chasing rides. The park’s rapid expansion and Hyperion’s 2018 debut pushed international attention toward Zator, a small town that had not previously been on the theme-park map.

That momentum was reflected in 2021, when Energylandia ranked eighth on Google’s list of Europe’s most-searched tourist attractions, putting it alongside far older and more established parks on the continent.

Movie Park Germany is a film and television-themed amusement park in Bottrop-Kirchhellen, North Rhine-Westphalia, about 50 kilometers north of Düsseldorf. The site began life in 1967 as the fairytale-themed Kirchhellener Märchenwald before being redeveloped and reopened on June 30, 1996 as Warner Bros. Movie World Germany. It was renamed Movie Park Germany in 2005 and has been owned by the Spanish leisure group Parques Reunidos since 2010.

Spread across roughly 40 hectares (100 acres), the park is organized into themed zones inspired by Hollywood productions, including Hollywood Street Set, Streets of New York, Nickland, The Old West, and Santa Monica Pier. It combines movie-studio-style sets and stunt shows with a lineup of roller coasters and family rides, making it one of the larger theme park destinations in western Germany.

The Ride Lineup

The park’s signature thrill ride is Star Trek: Operation Enterprise, a Mack Rides launch coaster that opened in 2017, reaching about 90 km/h (56 mph) across roughly 720 meters of track with three inversions and a triple-launch layout. The wooden coaster Bandit, built by the Roller Coaster Corporation of America, is one of the park’s longest-running attractions, standing about 91 feet tall with a top speed near 50 mph. Other coasters include the inverted Iron Claw and the suspended family coaster Jimmy Neutron’s Atomic Flyer, alongside Gerstlauer’s Van Helsing’s Factory.

From Fairytale Forest to Movie Studio

Before it became a movie-themed park, the site operated for decades as Kirchhellener Märchenwald, a small fairytale forest attraction dating to 1967. Warner Bros. acquired and redeveloped the property in the mid-1990s, opening it as Warner Bros. Movie World Germany in 1996 with sets and characters tied to the studio’s film library. After Warner Bros. sold the park, it was rebranded Movie Park Germany in 2005, broadening its theming beyond Warner properties to a wider mix of film and TV franchises.

Mirabilandia is a large amusement park located in Savio, a district of Ravenna in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. Opened on 4 July 1992, it grew from a struggling regional attraction into the biggest theme park in Italy, covering roughly 850,000 square meters (about 210 acres) of coastal Adriatic land. Spanish operator Parques Reunidos has run the park since acquiring it in 2006, and Mirabilandia now draws around two million visitors a year.

The park is best known for its lineup of extreme roller coasters and record-setting attractions, including the Bolliger & Mabillard inverted coaster Katun, the Intamin launch coaster iSpeed, and the Divertical water coaster, which held the title of the world’s tallest water coaster at 60 meters. Alongside its 41 attractions and adjoining Mirabeach water park, Mirabilandia has continued to expand in recent years, adding a Nickelodeon-themed land in 2025.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Savio, Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Opened: July 4, 1992

Area: About 850,000 square meters (210 acres)

Operator: Parques Reunidos (since 2006)

Attractions: About 41, including 10 roller coasters

Signature ride: Katun (B&M inverted coaster, opened 2000, 50m tall, 6 inversions)

Notable feature: Eurowheel, a 92-meter Ferris wheel, one of Europe’s tallest

Annual visitors: About 2 million

The Ride Experience

Mirabilandia’s coaster collection centers on Katun, a Bolliger & Mabillard inverted coaster that opened in 2000 and remains one of the longest inverted coasters in Europe, sending riders through a vertical loop, zero-G roll, cobra roll, and twin corkscrews at speeds up to about 65 mph. iSpeed, an Intamin launch coaster added in 2009, catapults riders to roughly 68 mph in just over two seconds before a nearly 180-foot top hat, making it one of the tallest and fastest launch coasters in Italy.

Beyond its steel coasters, the park is known for large-scale novelty attractions, including the Divertical water coaster and the towering Eurowheel observation wheel, which offers views over the pine forests toward the Adriatic coastline.

History and Growth

The park opened in 1992 near the pine grove of Classe along the Adriatica state road, with early shareholders including Silvio Berlusconi. Financial trouble in the mid-1990s nearly forced closure, and the park was sold in 1997 to a joint venture involving the company behind Germany’s Phantasialand. Parques Reunidos took over operations in 2006 and has since expanded the park with new coasters, the Mirabeach water park, and themed lands developed in partnership with brands like Nickelodeon.

Gardaland opened on July 19, 1975, in Castelnuovo del Garda near Lake Garda in northern Italy, becoming the country’s first major themed amusement park. Founded by entrepreneur Livio Furini and inspired by parks like Disneyland, it grew from a modest opening into Italy’s most visited theme park, drawing roughly 60,000 guests in its first month alone.

Now owned by Merlin Entertainments since 2006, Gardaland spans about 200,000 square meters of rides and attractions within a larger 520,000 square meter resort complex that includes three themed hotels and, since 2021, Europe’s first Legoland Waterpark. With around 3 million visitors annually, it consistently ranks among the seven or eight most-visited theme parks in Europe and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025.

Location: Castelnuovo del Garda, Verona, Italy

Opened: July 19, 1975

Owner: Merlin Entertainments (since 2006)

Park Area: About 200,000 m² (520,000 m² total resort)

Annual Visitors: About 2.95–3 million

Attractions: 37 rides and attractions, including 7 roller coasters

Signature Coaster: Oblivion: The Black Hole, a B&M dive coaster

The Ride Experience

Gardaland’s coaster lineup is anchored by two Bolliger & Mabillard machines. Oblivion: The Black Hole, opened in March 2015, was Italy’s first vertical-drop dive coaster, standing about 42.5 meters tall with an 87-degree first drop reaching around 100 km/h across a 566-meter track. Raptor, Italy’s first wing coaster, opened in 2011 and stands about 33 meters tall with three inversions and floorless, wing-mounted seating that reaches speeds near 90 km/h.

Beyond the coasters, the park mixes dark rides like the Jumanji-themed attractions and Animal Treasure Island with water rides such as Jungle Rapids and Fuga da Atlantide, giving Gardaland a broader family-park identity rather than a pure thrill-coaster reputation.

A Resort Built Over 50 Years

What began as a single park has expanded into a full resort destination. Merlin Entertainments’ ownership since 2006 brought steady investment, including the 2021 debut of Legoland Waterpark Gardaland, Europe’s first Legoland-branded water park. Three themed hotels — Gardaland Hotel, Adventure Hotel, and Magic Hotel — now support overnight guests.

Gardaland marked its 50th anniversary in 2025, having welcomed an estimated 100 million visitors since 1975, cementing its status as the flagship of Italian theme parks and a major stop for European coaster enthusiasts.

Parc Astérix opened on April 30, 1989, in Plailly, roughly 35 kilometers northeast of Paris, built around the beloved Asterix comic book universe created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. Spanning about 34 hectares (83 acres) and operated by Compagnie des Alpes, the park blends Gallic, Roman, Greek, and Egyptian theming across its lands, making it one of France’s most distinctive family destinations.

Now home to 44 attractions, including nine roller coasters and seven water rides, Parc Astérix has steadily built a reputation among enthusiasts for aggressive, record-chasing steel coasters alongside classic wooden thrills. It ranks as France’s second most-visited entertainment resort behind only Disneyland Paris, drawing a record 2.84 million visitors in 2024.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Plailly, Oise, France

Opened: April 30, 1989

Operator: Compagnie des Alpes

Size: About 34 hectares (83 acres)

Attractions: 44, including 9 roller coasters

2024 Attendance: About 2.84 million visitors (park record)

Notable Record: Toutatis (2023) is France’s tallest and fastest roller coaster

The Ride Experience

The park’s coaster lineup spans decades of design evolution. Goudurix, a steel multi-looper by Vekoma, has thrilled riders since the park’s 1989 opening, while Tonnerre 2 Zeus, a wooden coaster built by Custom Coasters International, arrived in 1997. More recent additions push the park into modern coaster territory: OzIris, a Bolliger & Mabillard inverted coaster, debuted in 2012, followed by the launched Gerstlauer coaster Pégase Express in 2017.

The park’s biggest statement came in 2023 with Toutatis, an Intamin launched coaster reaching about 51 meters tall and 107 km/h across roughly 1,075 meters of track, with seven LSM launches and 23 airtime moments. It currently holds the title of tallest and fastest roller coaster in France.

History and Growth

Parc Astérix was conceived as a French answer to the growing wave of American-style theme parks and has expanded steadily since 1989, adding new coasters and themed lands roughly every few years. Its continued investment in headline attractions, most recently the spinning Gerstlauer coaster Cétautomatix in 2025, has helped it climb into the ranks of Europe’s most-visited parks.

It opened as PortAventura Park on May 1, 1995, and has since grown into a three-park destination alongside six themed on-site hotels, making it consistently the most-visited theme park in Spain.

The resort’s expansion accelerated in 2017 with the addition of Ferrari Land, home to Red Force, a launch coaster that briefly held the title of the world’s tallest roller coaster. Combined with the original PortAventura Park and the Caribe Aquatic Park water park, the resort now covers roughly 119 hectares (294 acres) of themed lands, rides, and water attractions.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Salou & Vila-seca, Catalonia, Spain

Opened: May 1, 1995

Operator: Investindustrial (co-owned with KKR)

Area: About 119 hectares (294 acres)

Theme Parks: 3 — PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land, Caribe Aquatic Park

Annual Visitors: About 5.2 million (2019)

Tallest Ride: Red Force, 112 m (367 ft), Intamin

The Ride Experience

PortAventura Park’s five themed lands — Mediterrània, Far West, México, China, and Polynesia — hold some of Europe’s most respected coasters. Dragon Khan, a Bolliger & Mabillard looping coaster reaching about 45 m (148 ft) and 105 km/h (65 mph), opened with the park in 1995 and remains a signature ride. Shambhala, also from Bolliger & Mabillard, arrived in 2012 as Europe’s tallest coaster at 76 m (249 ft) with a top speed of 134 km/h (83 mph) and no inversions, relying instead on camelback airtime hills.

Next door at Ferrari Land, Red Force takes the intensity further. Opened in 2017, the Intamin launch coaster accelerates riders from 0 to 180 km/h (112 mph) in about five seconds before rocketing up a 112 m top hat tower, briefly holding the record as the world’s tallest roller coaster between late 2024 and mid-2025.

A Resort Beyond the Coasters

PortAventura World is built as a full vacation destination rather than a single-day park. Six on-site hotels, themed to the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Mexican, and American West aesthetics, sit alongside the parks, and the Caribe Aquatic Park adds roughly 50,000 square meters of slides and pools themed to a Caribbean beach setting.

The resort’s scale and consistent investment in headline attractions, from Dragon Khan in 1995 to Red Force in 2017, have kept it Spain’s top-attended theme park and a fixture on European coaster enthusiasts’ must-visit lists.
