Berlin Zoo, formally the Zoologischer Garten Berlin, opened in 1844 in the city’s Tiergarten park, making it the oldest surviving zoo in Germany. Over nearly two centuries it grew into the most species-diverse zoo in the world, a record it has held for decades, while surviving near-total destruction during World War II when Allied bombing in November 1943 killed roughly 30 percent of its animal population in a single day.

Today the zoo spans about 35 hectares (86.5 acres) in the heart of Berlin and draws more visitors annually than any other zoo in Europe. It has been home to some of the most famous zoo animals of the modern era, including the polar bear cub Knut, who became a global media sensation after his birth in 2006, and the giant pandas Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, whose twin cubs Leni and Lotti celebrated their first birthday in August 2025.

Location: Tiergarten, Berlin, Germany

Opened: 1844

Size: About 35 hectares (86.5 acres)

Species: 1,021 species (2025 official inventory)

Animal count: About 21,930 individual animals (2025)

Annual visitors: Around 3.3 million

Famous for: Housing more animal species than any other zoo in the world

A Zoo Rebuilt From Ruins

Berlin Zoo’s history is defined as much by resilience as by scale. Founded in 1844 from the royal Pfaueninsel menagerie collection, it grew into one of Europe’s premier zoological gardens before World War II nearly wiped it out. Bombing raids in November 1943 killed about 30 percent of the animal population on the first night alone, and by the war’s end in May 1945 only 91 of the zoo’s 3,715 animals had survived. The zoo was almost entirely rebuilt from that low point, restoring its collection and its landmark entrance gates over the following decades.

That rebuilding effort paid off: Berlin Zoo has since become recognized as the most species-rich zoo on the planet. Its 2025 official animal inventory counted 1,021 species and 21,930 individual animals spanning mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates housed across its Tiergarten grounds alongside the neighboring Berlin Aquarium.

Famous Residents

Few zoo animals have captured global attention like Knut, the polar bear cub born at Berlin Zoo in December 2006, who was hand-raised by keepers after his mother rejected him and went on to become an international celebrity before his death in 2011. The zoo’s giant panda enclosure, home to Meng Meng and Jiao Qing since 2017, has produced several sets of panda cubs, including twins Leni and Lotti born in 2024, continuing a lineage that began with Bao Bao, one of Germany’s first pandas.

The Semperoper is the historic opera house of the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden (Saxon State Opera), standing on Theaterplatz near the Elbe River in Dresden, Germany. Designed by architect Gottfried Semper, the building first opened in 1841 in a style blending early Renaissance and Baroque elements with Corinthian pillars, quickly becoming one of the most important opera houses in the German-speaking world.

The building has been rebuilt twice after catastrophe struck. A fire destroyed Semper’s original structure in 1869, and a Neo-Renaissance replacement designed with his son Manfred opened in 1878. That version was reduced to a shell by Allied bombing in 1945 and stood in ruins for decades before East German authorities restored it, reopening the house on February 13, 1985. Today it hosts the Staatskapelle Dresden orchestra and the Semperoper Ballett alongside the resident opera company.

Location: Dresden, Germany

Type: Opera house

Opened: April 13, 1841 (original); rebuilt 1878; reopened February 13, 1985

Capacity: About 1,300 seats

Architect: Gottfried Semper

Famous for: World premieres of Wagner’s Rienzi, The Flying Dutchman, and Tannhäuser, and Strauss’s Salome, Elektra, and Der Rosenkavalier

A Building Rebuilt Twice

Few opera houses have survived as much destruction as the Semperoper. The original 1841 building burned down in 1869 during renovation work, prompting Gottfried Semper’s son Manfred to lead a new design that opened in 1878 in a grander Neo-Renaissance and Baroque Revival style. That second building was gutted by Allied bombing raids on Dresden in February 1945, leaving only its outer walls standing for over three decades before East Germany funded a painstaking reconstruction, completed in 1985 on the 40th anniversary of the bombing. A 2002 Elbe flood later caused further water damage, requiring additional repairs.

A Stage for Wagner and Strauss

The Semperoper’s reputation rests heavily on its role in operatic history. Richard Wagner, who served as conductor in Dresden, premiered Rienzi, The Flying Dutchman, and Tannhäuser at the house in the 1840s. Richard Strauss later chose the Semperoper for the world premieres of Salome, Elektra, and Der Rosenkavalier in the early 20th century. The tradition continues today through the resident Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden, the Staatskapelle Dresden orchestra, and the Semperoper Ballett, which together maintain a full season of opera, orchestral, and dance performances.

The Nürburgring is best known as one of the world’s most demanding motorsport complexes, but for one weekend each June its paddock and surrounding grounds in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, transform into the site of Rock am Ring, Germany’s biggest rock music festival. Since 1985, the sprawling site in the Eifel mountains has drawn tens of thousands of fans per day to see international rock and metal acts perform on stages built within sight of the famous racing circuit.

If you’re trying to figure out exactly where Rock am Ring takes place, how many people it holds, or how the 2026 edition compared to past years, here’s the full breakdown, including location details, capacity figures, and what to expect if you’re planning to attend.

Quick Answer

Rock am Ring is held at the Nürburgring motorsport complex in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, in the Eifel mountains roughly 60 km southwest of Bonn and 90 km from Cologne. The festival’s daily capacity is about 90,000 fans, and the June 5-7, 2026 edition sold out at that figure, making it Germany’s largest rock and metal festival by attendance.

Where Is Rock am Ring Held?

Rock am Ring takes place on the grounds of the Nürburgring race track, near the village of Nürburg in the Eifel region of Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany. The festival is built on and around the circuit’s infield and paddock area, the same land used for Formula 1 and endurance racing the rest of the year, which is what gives the event its distinctive backdrop of grandstands and pit buildings rather than a typical festival field.

The nearest larger cities are Koblenz (about 40 km away), Bonn (around 60 km), and Cologne (roughly 90 km), all connected by regional rail with festival shuttle buses running to the site during the event. For exact directions, parking zones, and shuttle schedules, the festival’s own Getting There guide on the official Rock am Ring site is updated each year and is the most reliable source closer to the event.

How Big Is Rock am Ring? Capacity & Attendance

Rock am Ring’s daily attendance cap has settled at around 90,000 festivalgoers in recent years. The event debuted in 1985 with roughly 75,000 attendees, climbed to a record 92,500 in 2016, and has consistently sold out near the 90,000 mark in the editions since, including the 2026 run, which organizers confirmed sold out at 90,000 tickets.

It’s worth clearing up a common point of confusion: Rock am Ring shares its lineup with a sister festival, Rock im Park, held simultaneously at the Zeppelinfeld in Nuremberg. Combined attendance across both sites has topped 150,000 in peak years, but that figure covers two separate venues in two different cities, not a single crowd at the Nürburgring. The Nürburgring’s own daily figure of around 90,000 is the number that reflects how big the festival actually is on site.

Main Stage Capacity and Festival Layout

Rock am Ring runs on multiple stages spread across the Nürburgring grounds, with the main stage hosting the festival’s headline sets each night. Organizers don’t publish an official capacity figure for the main stage alone, but since it’s the focal point for headliner performances, it regularly draws the bulk of that day’s roughly 90,000 attendees during peak sets.

Alongside the stages, the site includes large camping fields, food and merchandise courts, and cashless payment infrastructure, all built as temporary infrastructure on land that reverts to motorsport use once the festival weekend ends.

From Race Track to Festival Grounds

The Nürburgring opened in 1927 as a purpose-built racing circuit around the village and medieval castle of Nürburg, and its punishing Nordschleife loop earned the nickname ‘the Green Hell’ from driver Jackie Stewart. Decades later, promoter Marek Lieberberg chose the site’s newly built Grand Prix circuit to stage a concert marking the track’s modern era, and that 1985 show became the seed of what grew into Rock am Ring.

Each summer, temporary stages, camping fields, and food courts spread across the paddock and surrounding land, turning a facility built for endurance racing into one of Germany’s premier concert destinations for a few days at a time before it reverts back to motorsport use.

A Festival Built on Scale

Rock am Ring has hosted acts ranging from U2, David Bowie, and Fleetwood Mac in its early years to Metallica, Green Day, System of a Down, and Linkin Park in more recent decades, with blink-182 announced as an early headliner for the 2027 edition. The festival briefly relocated to nearby Mendig Air Base in 2015 and 2016 before returning to the Nürburgring in 2017, and it was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring how tightly the event’s identity is tied to its home track in the Eifel region.

Planning Your Visit

Tickets for Rock am Ring are sold directly through the festival, typically in tiers covering single-day entry, full weekend access, and weekend-plus-camping packages, with early presale batches historically selling out within hours. Camping opens a day or two ahead of the music and is included with most multi-day passes rather than sold separately.

Because dates, prices, and on-site policies (bag rules, cashless payment top-ups, entry requirements) change year to year, check the official Rock am Ring tickets page before you book, and the site’s info and getting-there sections for current parking, shuttle, and camping details.

Is the Nürburgring a music venue or a race track?

Primarily a motorsport complex, the Nürburgring also functions as a major music venue once a year when it hosts Rock am Ring, Germany’s largest rock festival, on its paddock grounds.

When did Rock am Ring start at the Nürburgring?

Rock am Ring began in 1985 as a one-time concert celebrating the opening of the track’s modern Grand Prix circuit, and it became an annual event after drawing about 75,000 fans.

Wacken Open Air has transformed a tiny farming village in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany into the self-proclaimed capital of heavy metal every summer since 1990. What began as a modest local gathering with a few hundred fans has grown into a four-day pilgrimage for tens of thousands of metalheads traveling from more than 80 countries, all converging on former farmland to camp, headbang, and celebrate every subgenre of metal imaginable.

Because so many fans plan their trip around exactly how big this event is and exactly where it happens, this guide breaks down Wacken’s official capacity, how attendance has grown since 1990, and precisely where the village sits relative to Hamburg and the rest of Germany.

Quick Answer

Wacken Open Air’s official capacity is about 85,000 attendees per edition, making it the largest heavy metal festival in the world by crowd size. It takes place on a 240+ hectare former farmland site in the village of Wacken, in the Steinburg district of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, roughly 70 km (about 45 miles) northwest of Hamburg.

The Festival Experience

Wacken Open Air spreads across eight stages, with the massive ‘Faster’ and ‘Harder’ stages anchoring the main lineup of roughly 200 bands spanning power metal, thrash, death metal, black metal, doom, industrial, symphonic, and folk metal. Beyond the music, attendees camp on-site amid themed zones like the mock-medieval Wackinger village and the post-apocalyptic Wasteland area, turning the farmland into a self-contained metal community for the weekend.

Running the event takes serious infrastructure: several thousand staff handle security, medical care, and logistics, supported by more than 1,300 toilets and nearly 500 showers spread across the grounds. That scale of planning is part of why Wacken has become a benchmark for how a genre-specific festival can grow from a local farm gathering into an internationally renowned institution.

Wacken Open Air Capacity: How Many People Attend

Wacken’s attendance has grown enormously since its first edition in 1990, when just around 800 fans and six local bands showed up. By 2011, the festival drew a record 80,000 paying visitors plus roughly 6,000 staff and crew, a combined crowd of about 86,000 that earned Wacken a Guinness World Record for the largest heavy metal festival ever held.

In recent years the organizers have capped official ticket sales at around 85,000, which is now the standard figure cited as Wacken’s capacity, and every edition since has sold out that allotment. The one notable exception was 2023, when severe storms and flooding forced organizers to close roads and halt ground traffic; despite 80,000 tickets having sold out months earlier, only about 60,000 fans were able to reach the site that year. The 2026 edition, Wacken’s 35th anniversary, sold out its full run of tickets well ahead of the festival.

Where Is Wacken Open Air Located?

Wacken Open Air is held in and around the village of Wacken, a municipality of roughly 2,000 residents in the Steinburg district of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany. The festival grounds actually spill across the fields of several neighboring communities, including Gribbohm, Bokelrehm, and Holstenniendorf, on more than 240 hectares of former farmland enclosed by over 45 kilometers of fencing.

The nearest major city is Hamburg, about 70 km (roughly 45 miles) to the southeast, and Hamburg Airport is the closest international airport, about 75 km from the site. Fans arriving by train typically connect through Itzehoe station, with regional trains running from Hamburg and festival shuttles or taxis covering the final stretch to Wacken. Drivers generally take the A23 motorway toward Heide and exit at Schenefeld before following signage into the village.

A Sellout Every Year

Tickets for Wacken Open Air have become notoriously hard to secure, with recent editions selling out within hours of going on sale, and the 2026 edition sold out its full capacity ahead of the festival weekend. Demand like that reflects Wacken’s reputation as the essential pilgrimage for metal fans worldwide.

The festival also expanded its format in 2023, growing from three to four full days to accommodate its packed lineup and growing crowds. Combined with its Guinness World Record recognition, Wacken Open Air has cemented itself as the largest and most enduring gathering point for heavy metal culture anywhere in the world. For current ticket windows, presale dates, and travel details, check the official Wacken Open Air website, which is also the only reliable source for exact pricing and on-sale times.

Wacken Open Air FAQs

What is Wacken Open Air’s capacity?

Wacken Open Air’s official capacity is about 85,000 attendees. That figure has been the standard cap on ticket sales in recent editions, and the festival reliably sells out that allotment.

How many people go to Wacken Open Air?

Around 85,000 people attend Wacken Open Air in a typical year, traveling from more than 80 countries. The record turnout was roughly 86,000 in 2011 (80,000 visitors plus about 6,000 staff), which earned the festival a Guinness World Record.

Where is Wacken Open Air located?

Wacken Open Air takes place in the village of Wacken in the Steinburg district of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on farmland shared with neighboring communities like Gribbohm and Bokelrehm. It sits about 70 km northwest of Hamburg, the nearest major city.

When did Wacken Open Air start?

Wacken Open Air began in 1990 in the small village of Wacken, Germany, and has been held annually since, aside from pandemic-related cancellations.

How long does Wacken Open Air last?

The Nürburgring is a motorsport complex built into the hills of the Eifel mountains near the village of Nürburg in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Construction began in September 1925 and the circuit opened in the spring of 1927, originally conceived as a proving ground for German automakers and a venue to put the country on the international racing map.

The facility’s centerpiece is the Nordschleife (‘North Loop’), a brutally demanding 20.8-kilometer (12.9-mile) circuit with over 70 corners and dramatic elevation changes. After Scottish F1 champion Jackie Stewart won a fog-shrouded, rain-soaked race there in 1968, he dubbed it ‘the Green Hell,’ a nickname that has stuck for more than half a century and is now used worldwide to describe the track’s fearsome reputation.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

Opened: 1927

Capacity: About 150,000 spectators

Nordschleife Length: 20.8 km (12.9 mi)

GP-Strecke Length: 5.148 km (3.2 mi)

Signature Event: 24 Hours Nürburgring (annually since 1970)

Nickname: “The Green Hell”

The Nordschleife: The Green Hell

The Nordschleife’s combination of blind crests, off-camber turns, and rapidly changing weather across its long, forested lap made it one of the most feared circuits in motorsport. Its danger became tragically clear during the 1976 German Grand Prix, when Niki Lauda crashed and was badly burned; that race was the last Formula 1 World Championship event held on the full 10-plus-kilometer circuit, after which F1 shifted to the shorter, purpose-built GP-Strecke.

Despite losing top-tier F1 competition, the Nordschleife never went quiet. It remains a proving ground for automakers testing production and performance cars, and on non-event days the track opens to the public for paid ‘Touristenfahrten’ (tourist laps), letting everyday drivers experience the same corners that have humbled professional racers for generations.

A Century of Motorsport History

The Nürburgring hosted the German Grand Prix intermittently from 1951 through 2013 and the European Grand Prix in the 1980s and 1990s, with Michael Schumacher recording the most Formula 1 victories at the venue, five wins between 1995 and 2006. The complex also includes the modern GP-Strecke, built in 1984, which continues to host Grand Prix racing and other international series.

Since 1970 the track has been home to the 24 Hours Nürburgring, an endurance race combining the Nordschleife and GP-Strecke into a single 25.4-kilometer combined circuit that draws roughly 200-plus cars and hundreds of thousands of spectators each year. In 2014, Russian businessman Viktor Kharitonin acquired a majority stake in the facility, which continues to operate as both a working race track and a tourist attraction.

Nürburgring FAQs

Why is the Nürburgring called the ‘Green Hell’?

F1 champion Jackie Stewart coined the nickname after winning a rain-and-fog-plagued race on the Nordschleife in 1968, and it has described the circuit’s unforgiving reputation ever since.

How long is the Nürburgring Nordschleife?

The Nordschleife measures about 20.8 kilometers (12.9 miles) and includes more than 70 corners and significant elevation changes.

Can the public still drive the Nürburgring today?

Yes. On days without scheduled racing, the Nordschleife opens to the public for paid tourist laps, and the separate GP-Strecke still hosts professional racing events.

Europa-Park is a 95-hectare theme park in Rust, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, founded by Franz Mack and his son Roland and opened to its first visitors on July 12, 1975. Built as a showcase for the family’s ride-manufacturing business, Mack Rides, it grew from a modest site with a handful of rides into one of the largest theme park resorts in the world, still owned and run by the Mack family today.

The park is organized into 21 themed areas, most representing different European countries and regions, giving visitors the feel of touring the continent within a single site. With around 100 attractions including 14 roller coasters and a dozen or so water rides, plus themed hotels and the adjoining Rulantica water park, Europa-Park draws millions of visitors annually and has repeatedly been voted one of the best theme parks in the world.

Photo: Olga Ernst / CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Stats at a Glance

Location: Rust, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Opened: July 12, 1975

Owner: Mack family (Europa-Park GmbH & Co Mack KG)

Size: About 95 hectares

Themed areas: 21 zones, mostly European countries/regions

Attractions: About 100, including 14 roller coasters

Annual visitors: Several million

The Ride Experience

Europa-Park’s coaster lineup draws on several of the world’s top manufacturers rather than a single builder. Silver Star, a Bolliger & Mabillard hypercoaster reaching about 73 meters tall, has anchored the park’s France-themed area since 2002, while Blue Fire Megacoaster, built by the park-owning Mack Rides, launches riders from a standstill to high speed in a matter of seconds. The wooden Wodan Timbur Coaster, built by American manufacturer Great Coasters International and opened in 2012, adds a classic-style ride themed to Norse mythology among the park’s more modern steel structures.

The newest addition, Voltron Nevera powered by Rimac, opened in 2024 in a new Croatian-themed area. According to RCDB, the Mack Rides-built multi-launch coaster uses several separate launches, climbs to a height of over 30 meters, and includes multiple inversions, including a launch into a beyond-vertical top-hat element billed as one of the steepest launches of any coaster in the world.

A Family-Run European Icon

Unlike many major theme parks owned by large corporations, Europa-Park has remained under Mack family ownership since it opened, with Franz Mack’s descendants still directing operations. The park has been recognized for years running as one of the world’s top-rated theme parks by industry awards such as the Golden Ticket Awards, and it was among the first theme parks in Germany to operate year-round.

Beyond rides, the resort includes several themed hotels, from the Roman-inspired Colosseo to the Spanish-styled El Andaluz, plus the Rulantica indoor water park, making Europa-Park as much a multi-day resort destination as a single-day theme park.

Europa-Park FAQs

When did Europa-Park open?

Europa-Park opened on July 12, 1975, founded by Franz Mack and his son Roland as a showcase for their family’s ride-manufacturing business, Mack Rides.

Where is Europa-Park located?

It is located in Rust, in the Baden-Württemberg region of southwestern Germany, near the border with France.

Are all of Europa-Park’s roller coasters built by Mack Rides?

No. While the park is owned by the Mack family and several coasters like Blue Fire Megacoaster and Voltron Nevera are Mack Rides builds, Silver Star was built by Bolliger & Mabillard and the wooden Wodan Timbur Coaster was built by Great Coasters International.

Tropical Islands Resort sits inside the Aerium, a colossal former airship hangar in Krausnick, Brandenburg, about 50 kilometers south of Berlin. Built by CargoLifter AG and completed in November 2000, the hangar became the world’s largest free-standing hall without interior support pillars before CargoLifter’s 2002 bankruptcy left the structure searching for a new purpose. Malaysian corporation Tanjong bought it in 2003 for €17.5 million and reopened it as an indoor tropical resort on December 19, 2004.

Since then, Tropical Islands has grown into the world’s largest indoor water park, surpassing Canada’s West Edmonton Mall waterpark in scale. The 66,000-square-meter interior holds a rainforest with roughly 50,000 plants, a lagoon-style pool, sandy beaches, and Germany’s tallest water slide tower, all kept at a steady 26°C regardless of the weather outside. Now owned by Spanish leisure group Parques Reunidos, the resort draws over a million visitors a year and continues to expand with new lodging like the 2024 OHANA Lodge complex.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Krausnick, Brandenburg, Germany

Opened: December 19, 2004

Building: Former CargoLifter airship hangar (the Aerium), completed 2000

Dimensions: About 360 m long, 210 m wide, 107 m high

Indoor area: About 66,000 square meters

Interior climate: Held at about 26°C (79°F), 64% humidity

Daily capacity: Up to about 8,200 visitors

Operator: Parques Reunidos (since 2018)

A Hangar Reborn

The building’s backstory is as striking as anything inside it. CargoLifter AG raised the Aerium in the late 1990s to assemble giant cargo airships, and its pillar-free interior remains the largest of its kind in the world by volume, holding about 5.5 million cubic meters of space. When CargoLifter collapsed financially in 2002, the empty hangar risked becoming a stranded industrial relic on the site of a former Soviet-era military airfield.

Instead, Tanjong’s 2003 purchase and subsequent redevelopment turned the shell into a climate-controlled tropical world. Visitors pass through what still looks like an aircraft hangar door into a landscape of palm trees, a beach lagoon, and a rainforest canopy, all lit by a translucent roof membrane that lets in natural daylight.

What’s Inside

The centerpiece Tropical Sea lagoon spans thousands of square meters and anchors a network of slides, saunas, and relaxation areas, including Germany’s tallest water slide tower. The Rainforest section houses around 50,000 plants across some 600 species, while the outdoor Amazonia area outside the dome adds camping and lodging space exceeding 35,000 square meters.

Because the entire park sits under one climate-controlled roof, it operates year-round regardless of the harsh Brandenburg winters outside, a rarity among water parks of its scale and a key reason it has kept its title as the world’s largest indoor water park.

Tropical Islands FAQs

Is Tropical Islands really inside an airship hangar?

Yes. The park occupies the Aerium, a hangar CargoLifter AG built to assemble airships, completed in 2000. It remains the largest free-standing hall in the world without interior support pillars.

How far is Tropical Islands from Berlin?

It’s located in Krausnick, Brandenburg, about 50 kilometers south of Berlin, reachable via the A13 autobahn or by train to the Brand Tropical Islands station with a shuttle connection.

What temperature is it kept at inside?

The interior is climate-controlled to about 26°C (79°F) with roughly 64% humidity year-round, regardless of the weather outside.

Galaxy Erding is the water slide complex at Therme Erding, a massive thermal spa in the Bavarian town of Erding, about 30 minutes northeast of Munich, Germany. The Galaxy section opened on March 31, 2007, adding a dedicated slide park to the thermal baths that had opened at the site in 1999, quickly making it one of the largest indoor water slide parks in Europe.

Housed beneath a domed roof that can be partially opened in summer, Galaxy Erding now features 28 water slides stretching roughly 2,850 meters combined, built with attractions supplied by German manufacturer Wiegand.Waterrides. Slides are organized into three difficulty tiers, letting families and thrill-seekers alike choose an experience that matches their nerve.

Stats at a Glance

Location: Erding, Bavaria, Germany

Part of: Therme Erding

Galaxy opened: March 31, 2007

Water slides: 28

Total slide length: about 2,850 meters

Difficulty levels: Family, Action, X-Treme

Notable slide: Magic Eye, billed as the world’s longest tube slide at about 365 meters

Manufacturer: Wiegand.Waterrides

The Ride Experience

Galaxy Erding’s slide lineup ranges from gentle family rides to genuine adrenaline. The Magic Eye tube slide is the headline attraction, running about 365 meters through darkness and light effects and marketed by the park as the longest of its kind in the world. For steeper thrills, riders can try the Kamikaze, a roughly 34-meter chute with a drop of about 60 degrees, or the tire-raft Big Wave, which includes an outdoor water-halfpipe section.

Other rides, like the Black Mamba and the multi-slide Space Glider, add themed lighting and uphill sections to keep the ride from being a straight drop. Some slides also offer scheduled virtual-reality sessions, an unusual feature for a water park, letting riders wear a headset synced to the twists and turns of the slide.

Part of Europe’s Largest Thermal Spa

Galaxy sits within Therme Erding, a thermal bathing complex that traces back to 1983, when an oil-drilling operation near Erding struck sulfurous thermal water instead of oil. The broader Therme Erding complex opened in October 1999, and the Galaxy slide section was added in 2007 to give the resort a dedicated water park alongside its saunas and thermal pools.

The domed Galaxy hall rises about 25 meters and can be opened in warmer months, blending an indoor park’s reliability with an outdoor feel. Therme Erding as a whole draws an estimated 4,000 visitors a day, making Galaxy one of the busiest indoor water slide destinations in Europe.

The site began life in 1967 as the fairytale-themed Kirchhellener Märchenwald before being redeveloped and reopened on June 30, 1996 as Warner Bros. Movie World Germany. It was renamed Movie Park Germany in 2005 and has been owned by the Spanish leisure group Parques Reunidos since 2010.

Spread across roughly 40 hectares (100 acres), the park is organized into themed zones inspired by Hollywood productions, including Hollywood Street Set, Streets of New York, Nickland, The Old West, and Santa Monica Pier. It combines movie-studio-style sets and stunt shows with a lineup of roller coasters and family rides, making it one of the larger theme park destinations in western Germany.

The wooden coaster Bandit, built by the Roller Coaster Corporation of America, is one of the park’s longest-running attractions, standing about 91 feet tall with a top speed near 50 mph. Other coasters include the inverted Iron Claw and the suspended family coaster Jimmy Neutron’s Atomic Flyer, alongside Gerstlauer’s Van Helsing’s Factory.

From Fairytale Forest to Movie Studio

Before it became a movie-themed park, the site operated for decades as Kirchhellener Märchenwald, a small fairytale forest attraction dating to 1967. Warner Bros. acquired and redeveloped the property in the mid-1990s, opening it as Warner Bros. Movie World Germany in 1996 with sets and characters tied to the studio’s film library. After Warner Bros. sold the park, it was rebranded Movie Park Germany in 2005, broadening its theming beyond Warner properties to a wider mix of film and TV franchises.

Standing 174 feet above the Palatinate countryside, Expedition GeForce is the tallest and fastest ride at Plopsaland Deutschland — and one of the most decorated steel roller coasters ever built. Since opening in 2001, this Intamin mega coaster has paired an 82-degree first drop with seven distinct moments of airtime, sending riders past 74 mph in just over a minute of track.

Built by Swiss manufacturer Intamin and engineered by famed German designer Werner Stengel, Expedition GeForce turned the former Holiday Park into a pilgrimage site for coaster enthusiasts across Europe. Below is everything worth knowing before you ride: exact height and speed figures, the full stats sheet, its award history, and what to expect when you visit Plopsaland Deutschland.

Quick Answer

Expedition GeForce stands 174 feet (53 m) tall with a 168-foot (51 m) first drop, making it one of the tallest roller coasters on the European mainland. It’s located at Plopsaland Deutschland (formerly Holiday Park) in Haßloch, Germany, where this Intamin-built Mega Coaster reaches a top speed of 74.6 mph (120 km/h) across 4,003 feet (1,220 m) of track, with an 82-degree first drop and zero inversions.

Expedition GeForce Height, Speed & Full Stats

At 174 feet (53 m) tall, Expedition GeForce was the tallest roller coaster on the European mainland when it opened in 2001, a title it held until Europa-Park’s Silver Star arrived a few years later. The coaster climbs its lift hill on a cable-launch system — the same technology used on Cedar Point’s Millennium Force — before plunging riders down an 82-degree first drop toward the valley floor.

Height: 174 ft (53 m)

First drop: 168 ft (51 m) at 82°

Top speed: 74.6 mph (120 km/h)

Track length: 4,003 ft (1,220 m)

Duration: approx. 1 minute 15 seconds

Max G-force: 4.5 G

Inversions: 0

Trains: 2 trains, 28 riders each (7 cars, 2 across, 2 rows)

Capacity: up to 1,300 riders per hour

Height requirement: 55 in (140 cm)

Opened: June 18, 2001

Cost: approximately €10 million

Manufacturer: Intamin (Mega Coaster model)

Designer: Werner Stengel (Ing.-Büro Stengel GmbH)

Where Is Expedition GeForce? Inside Plopsaland Deutschland

Expedition GeForce is the headline attraction at Plopsaland Deutschland, a theme park in Haßloch, in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of southwestern Germany, roughly midway between Frankfurt and Strasbourg. The park operated for decades as Holiday Park before Belgium’s Plopsa Group took over and rebranded it as Plopsaland Deutschland, adding characters like the Smurfs and Maya the Bee alongside the park’s existing thrill-ride lineup.

Expedition GeForce kept its name and layout through the rebrand — it now carries a sponsor tag as bigFM Expedition GeForce — and remains the park’s signature ride and the main reason many out-of-town coaster fans make the trip to Haßloch in the first place.

The Ride Experience

After the cable lift hoists riders 174 feet into the air, Expedition GeForce sends them down an 82-degree first drop before charging through a relentless sequence of camelback hills, sweeping turns, and a signature overbanked curve. The 4,003-foot layout packs in seven distinct moments of weightlessness, giving it a reputation among enthusiasts for airtime density that few coasters — even much longer ones — can match.

The ride runs two 28-seat trains and can move up to 1,300 riders per hour, though queues regularly build on busy summer days given the coaster’s popularity. At peak intensity the layout generates 4.5 Gs, and the full circuit lasts around 1 minute 15 seconds — a short but famously intense run.

Awards, Records & Legacy

Expedition GeForce has been a fixture of Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Awards since its debut, ranking as high as the third-best steel roller coaster in the world in 2003 and again from 2013 through 2015, and finishing fourth in 2004, 2016, and 2018. It has slipped down the list in recent years — landing 9th in 2024 and 10th in 2025 — as newer hyper and giga coasters have entered the field, but it remains a consistent global top-10-to-15 presence more than two decades after opening.

At launch, Expedition GeForce was the tallest roller coaster on the European mainland, a record it held until Europa-Park’s Silver Star opened. It continues to draw coaster enthusiasts from across the continent as one of Europe’s most decorated steel rides and a benchmark for Intamin’s Mega Coaster line.

Planning Your Visit to Plopsaland Deutschland

Plopsaland Deutschland typically operates on a seasonal schedule — generally open daily through spring, summer, and early autumn, with reduced days in the off-season plus special events like Halloween and holiday openings. Because dates and hours shift year to year, check the official Plopsaland Deutschland opening-hours calendar before you go.

Admission is sold as single-day tickets or annual passes, with online prices generally cheaper than at the gate; children, seniors, and shorter visitors have separate pricing tiers, and young infants are typically free. Onsite parking is available for a daily fee. For current prices and to buy tickets in advance, use the official Plopsaland Deutschland ticket page. Riders must be at least 55 inches (140 cm) tall to board Expedition GeForce, so plan accordingly if you’re visiting with kids.
