SpeedMonster is a launched roller coaster at TusenFryd, a theme park near Oslo, Norway. Built by Swiss manufacturer Intamin and designed by Stengel Engineering, the ride opened on April 23, 2006, and was described at the time as the biggest single investment in the park’s history, costing around 60 million Norwegian kroner (about €7.5 million).

The coaster’s signature feature is the “Norwegian Loop,” billed as the first of its kind: an inversion element that wraps riders around the park’s distinctive entrance escalators. Built partly on a steep rock slope and threading through surrounding trees, SpeedMonster uses TusenFryd’s rugged terrain as part of the ride layout rather than flattening the land for it.

Photo: Andreasr24 / CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

The Ride Experience

Riders board one of two racing car-themed trains, each holding 12 people, before a hydraulic launch fires the train from 0 to 55.9 mph in just 2.2 seconds. That burst of acceleration generates forces of around 4 G, one of the more intense launches found on a European coaster of its era.

After the launch, the layout heads straight into the Norwegian Loop, then continues through a course that uses the site’s natural rock slope for drops and banked turns. The full ride lasts roughly a minute and covers about 690 meters of track before returning to the station.

Built Into the Landscape

Unlike coasters built on flat, cleared land, SpeedMonster was engineered around TusenFryd’s existing hillside and tree cover, which shaped both its construction cost and its unusual look from the park’s entrance plaza.

Since its debut, the ride has carried sponsorship branding, and it remains one of the park’s headline attractions alongside other coasters at the site.

Katun is an inverted roller coaster at Mirabilandia amusement park near Ravenna, Italy, built by Bolliger & Mabillard and designed by Werner Stengel. Opened on April 1, 2000, it takes its name from the Maya calendar term for a period of roughly 20 years, tying into the ride’s ancient Mayan ruins theming, complete with two ‘Stargate’ show elements riders pass through.

At 164 feet tall with a top speed near 65 mph, Katun has long been recognized as one of the longest inverted coasters in Europe, packing six inversions into a track stretching nearly 3,937 feet. It remains a signature attraction at Mirabilandia and has ranked highly in enthusiast polls over the years.

Photo by Vish Pix on Pexels

The Ride Experience

Riders board Katun’s trains, each seating 32 across eight cars, before launching into a course that mixes classic B&M inverted-coaster elements: a vertical loop, a zero-G roll, a cobra roll, and a pair of corkscrews near the finish. The layout is broken up by two themed ‘Stargate’ tunnels styled after ancient Mayan ruins, giving the ride a distinct sense of place amid Mirabilandia’s coaster lineup.

Because the trains hang below the track with feet dangling free, the inversions feel more disorienting and weightless than on a traditional sit-down coaster, a hallmark of B&M’s inverted design that helped make Katun a fan favorite in the early 2000s.

Legacy and Recognition

For years after opening, Katun was cited as the longest inverted roller coaster in Europe and one of the tallest complete-circuit inverted coasters worldwide, helping cement Mirabilandia’s reputation among European thrill parks. It also placed highly, at times as high as fifth, in Mitch Hawker’s Best Roller Coaster Poll, an annual enthusiast survey of top steel coasters.

It opened on July 14, 2021 as the headlining attraction of the park’s new Aqualantis area, becoming Energylandia’s 17th roller coaster and one of the most anticipated additions to the park’s growing lineup.

Themed around the lost city of Atlantis and named for a mythical ocean god (from the Latin word for “depth”), Abyssus uses two linear synchronous motor (LSM) launches to send its trains through a twisted top hat, a vertical loop, a batwing double inversion, and a corkscrew across more than 1,300 meters of track.

The Ride Experience

Abyssus begins with a lower-speed launch and a short twisting section before riders enter a second, more powerful LSM launch that propels the train to a top speed of around 62 mph. The train then climbs a twisted top hat roughly 126 feet tall before diving into the first of four inversions, a vertical loop, followed by an airtime-filled twisted hill that dives beneath the station.

The ride continues into a batwing double inversion and a corkscrew before returning to the station, with the full circuit lasting around two minutes across three 16-rider trains.

Theming and Setting

Abyssus anchors Energylandia’s Aqualantis area, themed around the rediscovered, long-submerged city of Atlantis. According to the park’s storyline, the coaster’s structure represents a pump station built by explorers who uncovered the ancient city, and the ride takes its name from a supposed ocean god tied to the Latin word for “depth.”

Flying Aces is a steel wing coaster at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, built by Swiss manufacturer Intamin and opened to the public on February 24, 2016. As only the second wing coaster Intamin ever produced, following Skyrush at Hersheypark, it pushed the design further than any before it, becoming the tallest, fastest, and longest wing coaster in the world upon debut.

The ride is themed around Francesco Baracca, the World War I Italian flying ace whose personal prancing horse emblem later became the Ferrari logo. Riders board biplane-styled trains and pass through a queue dressed as a WWI hangar and training camp before launching into a course built around a record-setting non-inverting loop.

Photo: Jeremy Thompson / CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Stats at a Glance

Park: Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

Manufacturer: Intamin

Opened: February 24, 2016

Height: About 63 m (207 ft)

Top speed: About 120 km/h (75 mph)

Length: About 1,500 m (4,921 ft)

Inversions: 1 (non-inverting loop plus heartline roll)

The Ride Experience

On a wing coaster like Flying Aces, riders sit in pairs on either side of the track with no floor, seat in front, or seat behind them, giving an open, exposed sensation as the biplane-style trains climb a 51-degree cable lift hill.

The signature element is a roughly 52 m (171 ft) non-inverting loop, the tallest of its kind at the time it opened, followed by a heartline roll and a fast, twisting return course that produces forces up to about 5 Gs.

Records and Recognition

When it opened in 2016, Flying Aces was certified by Guinness World Records as the tallest, fastest, and longest wing coaster on Earth, titles tied to its unique Intamin wing-seating layout rather than the broader roller coaster field.

Its theming ties directly into Ferrari’s brand history, since Francesco Baracca’s personal cavallino rampante emblem, adopted after his death in WWI, became the prancing horse still used on every Ferrari today.

Photo: Nick Parrino / Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Flying Aces FAQs

Where is the Flying Aces roller coaster located?

Flying Aces is located at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

What type of roller coaster is Flying Aces?

It is an Intamin-built wing coaster, meaning riders sit in pairs on the outer edges of the train with nothing directly in front of or behind their seat.

How fast does Flying Aces go?

Flying Aces reaches a top speed of about 120 km/h (75 mph), which made it the fastest wing coaster in the world when it opened in 2016.

Formula Rossa opened on November 4, 2010 at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi on Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates. Built by Intamin, the Formula One-themed launch coaster used a hydraulic catapult system to fling riders from a standstill to 100 km/h in about 2 seconds and on to a top speed of 240 km/h (149.1 mph) in just 4.9 seconds, instantly making it the fastest roller coaster on Earth.

The ride held that title for roughly 15 years, until Falcon’s Flight at Six Flags Qiddiya in Saudi Arabia opened on December 31, 2025 with a top speed of 155.3 mph. Formula Rossa closed for an extensive refurbishment from January 2024 to December 2024 before reopening, and it remains a marquee attraction at Ferrari World, requiring riders to wear protective goggles against sand and wind at speed.

Photo: Stdragon04 / CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Stats at a Glance

Park: Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

Manufacturer: Intamin

Opened: November 4, 2010

Height: about 170.6 ft (52 m)

Top Speed: 149.1 mph (240 km/h)

Length: about 6,804 ft (2,074 m)

Inversions: 0

Launch: Hydraulic launch, 0-149.1 mph in 4.9 seconds

The Ride Experience

Formula Rossa’s signature moment comes in the opening seconds: a hydraulic launch system rated at roughly 20,800 horsepower rockets the Ferrari-styled cars down a 400-meter launch track, generating forces up to 4.8 g. Because the sensation of wind at nearly 150 mph can be intense, and Abu Dhabi’s climate brings occasional sandstorms, every rider is required to wear protective safety goggles supplied by the park before boarding.

Despite its extreme speed, the layout has no inversions, relying instead on a large camelback hill and sweeping turns across its roughly 6,800-foot circuit to deliver airtime and lateral forces rather than loops. The entire ride, launch included, lasts only about a minute and a half, making it as much a raw speed showcase as a traditional coaster experience.

A Record-Setting Legacy

When it opened in 2010, Formula Rossa dethroned Kingda Ka to become the world’s fastest roller coaster, a title it defended for about 15 years. That reign ended on December 31, 2025, when Falcon’s Flight at Six Flags Qiddiya City in Saudi Arabia opened with a top speed of 155.3 mph using a linear synchronous motor launch instead of hydraulics.

Formula Rossa underwent a lengthy closure from January 2024 through December 2024 for refurbishment before reopening to the public, and it continues to operate today as the star attraction of Ferrari World’s Formula One-themed park.

Photo: Stdragon04 / CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Formula Rossa FAQs

Is Formula Rossa still the fastest roller coaster in the world?

No. It held the record from its 2010 opening until December 31, 2025, when Falcon’s Flight at Six Flags Qiddiya in Saudi Arabia surpassed it with a top speed of 155.3 mph.

How fast does Formula Rossa go and how quickly does it get there?

It reaches a top speed of 149.1 mph (240 km/h), hitting 100 km/h in about 2 seconds and its full top speed in about 4.9 seconds via a hydraulic launch system.

Why do riders have to wear goggles on Formula Rossa?

The park provides safety goggles because the combination of high speed and Abu Dhabi’s windy, sandy climate can make riding without eye protection uncomfortable or unsafe.

Standing roughly 56 meters (184 feet) tall, Wildfire is recognized as jointly the tallest wooden coaster in the world and the fastest wooden coaster in Europe, hitting about 115 km/h (71 mph) down its 49-meter first drop. Shortly after its debut, the ride was briefly shut down in October 2016 over an environmental permit dispute before reopening in June 2017 following county council approval.

The Ride Experience

Riders climb to a height of roughly 56 meters before plunging down a 49-meter drop at close to 83 degrees, sending trains up to about 115 km/h. Over a ride lasting around two minutes, Wildfire delivers three inversions, including a zero-G stall and two heartline rolls, along with a dozen airtime-filled hills across its terrain-hugging layout.

Because it runs on RMC’s Topper Track, Wildfire can execute tighter, more inverted elements than a classic wooden coaster while still relying on a timber support structure, giving it a rougher, more organic feel than an all-steel ride.

A Rocky Start

Wildfire’s opening season was short-lived: on October 28, 2016, Swedish authorities revoked the ride’s operating permit over environmental concerns tied to its construction. The coaster remained standing while the licensing dispute played out, and after the county council approved the necessary zoning in March 2017, Wildfire reopened to guests in June 2017.

Wildfire was built by Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC) using its Topper Track system, and designed by engineer Alan Schilke.

Is Wildfire a wooden or steel coaster?

Wildfire is a wooden coaster that uses RMC’s Topper Track, meaning a steel rail is bonded to a traditional wooden structure.

Why was Wildfire closed after opening?

The ride lost its operating permit in October 2016 due to an environmental dispute, then reopened in June 2017 after local government approval.

Wicker Man opened at Alton Towers in Staffordshire, England on 20 March 2018 as the first wooden roller coaster built in the United Kingdom in 22 years. Manufactured by Great Coasters International (GCI) with theming by Skyline Design LLC, the ride cost about £16 million and was built on the former site of the Flume attraction.

The coaster draws on pagan folklore for its theme, and it became known as one of the first wooden roller coasters in the world to combine timber track with real fire effects. Riders pass through the base of a towering wooden effigy three times during the course, encountering flames, smoke-filled tunnels, and video projections.

Park: Alton Towers, Staffordshire, England

Manufacturer: Great Coasters International (GCI)

Opened: March 20, 2018

Height: About 72 feet (22 m)

Top speed: About 43.6 mph (70.2 km/h)

Length: About 2,608 feet (795 m)

Inversions: 0

Track type: Wooden

The Ride Experience

Wicker Man’s layout is built around its central theming element: a large wooden effigy that riders pass beneath and through three separate times over the course of the ride. Real fire effects, smoke, and scent elements combine with GCI’s smooth wooden-coaster airtime to create a sensory experience that stands apart from typical family wooden coasters.

With a top speed of about 43.6 mph and a track length of roughly 2,608 feet, the ride lasts under two minutes but mixes quick drops and lateral turns typical of GCI’s layouts. Trains run three twelve-car units seating riders two across, giving the ride a steady loading rhythm despite its themed stops.

A Milestone for UK Wooden Coasters

When it opened in 2018, Wicker Man was the first wooden roller coaster built in the UK in 22 years, ending a long drought for the format at British theme parks. Its combination of timber construction and integrated fire effects was billed as a world first for the genre, drawing attention from coaster enthusiasts well beyond Alton Towers’ usual visitor base.

The ride replaced the park’s former Flume water attraction and was designed to fit within Alton Towers’ mix of themed lands, giving the resort a family-friendly wooden coaster alongside more intense steel rides like Nemesis and The Smiler.

The Smiler is a steel Infinity Coaster built by Gerstlauer at Alton Towers Resort in Staffordshire, England, and it opened on 31 May 2013. From its debut, the ride claimed the world record for the most inversions on any roller coaster — a total of 14 — beating every rival by a wide margin and cementing Alton Towers’ reputation as home to some of Europe’s most extreme thrill rides.

Themed around a fictional mind-control programme called the Ministry of Joy, The Smiler squeezes its record haul of inversions — corkscrews, cobra rolls, heartline rolls, and more — into a surprisingly compact footprint in the park’s X Sector. Riders reach a top speed of around 53 mph across 3,840 feet of track before the 2 minute 45 second ride deposits them back, dizzy and grinning, at the station.

Photo by Possessed Photography on Pexels

Stats at a Glance

Park: Alton Towers Resort, Staffordshire, England

Manufacturer: Gerstlauer Amusement Rides GmbH

Model: Infinity Coaster (Custom)

Opened: 31 May 2013

Height: 98 ft (30 m)

Top Speed: 53 mph (85 km/h)

Length: 3,840 ft (1,170 m)

Inversions: 14 (world record)

Duration: 2 min 45 sec

The Ride Experience

Boarding one of The Smiler’s trains, riders are plunged immediately into a relentless sequence of inversions with barely a moment to catch their breath. The layout features corkscrews, a cobra roll, a sea-serpent roll, and several heartline rolls, generating G-forces of up to 4.6. The compact layout means that elements weave over and under each other, giving the impression of an impossibly tangled knot of steel track — a spectacle almost as thrilling to watch as it is to ride.

Unlike many tall-and-fast coasters that rely on height for their headline statistic, The Smiler’s trump card is pure disorientation. At just 98 feet tall it is far from the loftiest ride at Alton Towers, but the sheer density of inversions — averaging one roughly every 270 feet of track — delivers an intensity that taller, faster machines rarely match.

Safety History and Improvements

On 2 June 2015, a serious collision occurred when a passenger-occupied train travelling at speed struck a stationary empty train, resulting in severe injuries to several riders. The incident was attributed to a manual override of the automated safety block system. The Smiler was closed for approximately nine months while Merlin Entertainments, the park’s owner, worked with regulators to overhaul its operating procedures and safety controls. Merlin pleaded guilty to health and safety breaches and was fined £5 million in September 2016.

The ride reopened on 19 March 2016 with enhanced safety systems and additional staff protocols. Since its return it has operated as one of Alton Towers’ flagship attractions, and its world record of 14 inversions remains unbroken as of 2026.

Oblivion opened at Alton Towers in Staffordshire, England on 14 March 1998 as the world’s first dive coaster and the first roller coaster to feature a near-vertical drop. Designed by Bolliger & Mabillard and engineer Werner Stengel, it was marketed as the ‘world’s first vertical drop roller coaster’ and cost £12 million to build — a landmark investment that set the template for an entirely new coaster category.

Themed around a shadowy experimental facility in Alton Towers’ X-Sector, Oblivion leans hard into psychological dread. Queue screens describe the experience in clinical stages: physical trauma, psychological breakdown, the schizophrenic sequence, and finally chaos. Before the plunge, trains pause on the brink of the 87.5-degree drop for several agonising seconds — a signature moment that became one of the most imitated in the industry.

Photo by Possessed Photography on Pexels

Stats at a Glance

Park: Alton Towers, Staffordshire, England

Manufacturer: Bolliger & Mabillard

Type: Dive Coaster

Opened: 14 March 1998

Height: 65 ft (19.8 m)

Drop: 180 ft (54.9 m) at 87.5°

Top Speed: 68 mph (109 km/h)

Length: 1,222 ft (372 m)

Inversions: 0

The Ride Experience

Riders board wide, 8-across cars that climb a relatively modest 65-foot lift hill before creeping out over the drop. The train stops, hanging over the void, before releasing into an 87.5-degree plunge — just half a degree shy of perfectly vertical — that drives riders to 4.5 g at the bottom. The track then ducks into a concrete tunnel buried beneath the park, giving the unsettling impression that the train is disappearing into the earth.

At 1 minute 15 seconds, Oblivion is brief but intense. After pulling out of the underground section, the layout delivers a sweeping high-banked turn before returning to the station. With a capacity of around 1,820 riders per hour spread across seven single-car trains, throughput is solid for a coaster that feels this extreme.

A Landmark in Coaster History

When Oblivion opened in 1998, no other coaster had offered a drop steeper than 90 degrees in an enclosed tunnel — the combination of the hold, the angle, and the buried exit made it genuinely unlike anything before it. B&M’s Dive Coaster model went on to spawn successors around the world, including SheiKra at Busch Gardens Tampa and Griffon at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, all tracing their DNA back to this Staffordshire original.

Nearly three decades on, Oblivion remains a staple of Alton Towers and a pilgrimage stop for coaster enthusiasts. Its influence on the industry — and on how parks use theatrical staging and psychological tension — is hard to overstate. For a ride with zero inversions and just 1,222 feet of track, it punches well above its weight in both history and reputation.

Oblivion FAQs

Where is Oblivion located?

Oblivion is located at Alton Towers theme park in Alton, Staffordshire, England, in the park’s X-Sector themed area.

How tall is Oblivion’s drop and at what angle?

Oblivion’s drop is 180 feet (54.9 m) at an angle of 87.5 degrees — just under perfectly vertical — plunging into an underground tunnel at the bottom.

What is the minimum height requirement to ride Oblivion?

Riders must be at least 140 cm (approximately 4 ft 7 in) tall to ride Oblivion at Alton Towers.

Nemesis is an inverted steel roller coaster at Alton Towers in Staffordshire, England, designed by Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) with a layout by Werner Stengel. When it opened on 19 March 1994, it became the first B&M inverted coaster to operate in Europe, setting a new benchmark for thrill rides on the continent.

Built into a natural ravine carved from the earth to comply with Alton Towers’ strict height restrictions, Nemesis delivers four inversions—a vertical loop, a zero-g roll, and two corkscrews—at a top speed of 50 mph. After nearly 30 years of operation, the ride underwent a complete refurbishment in 2023 and reopened in March 2024 under the name Nemesis Reborn.

Photo: Andrew Abbott / CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Stats at a Glance

Park: Alton Towers, Staffordshire, England

Manufacturer: Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M)

Opened: March 19, 1994

Height: 42.6 ft (13 m)

Drop: 104 ft (31.7 m)

Top Speed: 50 mph (81 km/h)

Length: 2,349 ft (716 m)

Inversions: 4

The Ride Experience

Riders board suspended trains and plunge immediately into a ravine that concept designer John Wardley had excavated to keep the coaster below the park’s planning height limits. The sequence—chain lift, corkscrew, zero-g roll, vertical loop, final corkscrew—generates up to 3.5 G-forces and passes within feet of rock walls and pools of red-tinted water, intensifying the alien-creature theme throughout the 1-minute-20-second ride.

Each of two trains carries 32 riders, and the attraction runs at a capacity of around 1,400 riders per hour. The combination of tight terrain interaction, relentless pacing, and minimal dead time made Nemesis one of the most celebrated steel coasters in Europe for three decades.

History and Legacy

Conceived as an alien creature unearthed during construction, Nemesis debuted in 1994 as a bold departure from the tamer attractions of its era. Its success helped establish B&M as the premier manufacturer of inverted coasters worldwide, and it has appeared consistently in Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Award rankings since the list launched in 1998, peaking at seventh in the world steel coaster standings in 2003.

In 2023 Alton Towers closed the ride for a full retrack and retheme. The overhauled attraction reopened on 16 March 2024 as Nemesis Reborn, preserving the original layout while introducing updated theming and refreshed trains for a new generation of riders.
